My four year old has been in this bit since he was broken in- he works nicely in it, and is quite settled in it.

I felt that it was time that he moved on from his fulmer, and I'm looking towards doing more dressage with him in the next couple of years to compliment his driving... He's in this Nathe for driving (on the snaffle ring, loose curb chain) and loves it.

Sooo... I forgot his bridle yesterday at the show and put him in hand in the Neue Schule team up, he took to it well and went nicely in hand. Tonight, I rode him in it and he was awful! No steady contact (loads of froth as usual) and just generally uncomfortable. So where do I go from here? Is the fulmer dressage legal? I'm not sure about the copper roller bit being legal, and if not, anyone got any ideas of where to go next?

Thank you x

I was pretty sure a fulmer was dressage legal although I stand to be corrected. I have this in my youngster's mouth and he goes fine in it and, when/if I get back on (once we've conquered the 'unplanned dismounting'!) Intend to keep him in it for a while. It helps with making steering instructions clearer for youngsters.

I'd try a normal french-link eggbutt snaffle as it will give a similar feel in his mouth as the fulmer, just without the cheeks. It's very gentle on the bars of the mouth as well, so if he is sensitive and frothy then he may be happier with it.

A fulmer is legal though, here is a full list of what is (I think this is up to date):
1. Loose ring snaffle
2. a,b,c Snaffle with jointed mouthpiece where middle piece is
rounded
3. Egg-butt snaffle
4. Racing snaffle D-ring
5. Egg-butt snaffle with cheeks
6. Loose ring snaffle with cheeks (Fulmer)
7. Snaffle with upper cheeks only
8. Hanging cheek snaffle
9. Straight bar snaffle. Permitted also with mullen mouth and
eggbutt rings
10. Snaffle with rotating mouthpiece
11. Double jointed with roller in the centre

a,b,c refers to diagrams that I haven't included. Hope that helps :)

Thank you for the reply- it was the copper roller part of it that I wasn't sure was dressage legal?

"A mix of metals in the mouthpiece are permitted. A plastic snaffle with
a cylindrical rotating mouthpiece is permitted. Minimum diameter of
the mouthpiece should be 10mm."
