My little Highland mare finally gave birth this morning, shes not overly happy with him feeding yet, but shes getting there slowly, thankfully i have some expert help at hand. Anyway, here is the little chap.

Is she a maiden mare? I am sure her natural instincts will be fine. One of my maidens spent the first 24 hours trying to kick her poor colt up in the air. I was so concerned I called vet. By cctv we discovered that she only did it when I was around and it was a jealousy thing! Turned out fine and with subsequent foals she didnt bother.
Your baby is yummy!

How did you guess, yes shes a maiden. We are watching them on CCTV as i type, she not horrible to him, she just walks away, he seems a little fighter though, so im hoping it will all be fine :)

Don't worry my mare kept walking away kept trying to face him every time he went to the bar. She will get used to it.

cute little chap

I take it he has suckled by now, otherwise you may need to get a headcollar on her and take him to the teat, he needs that colestrum.

We had already done that a few hours ago, & ive done it a few times since, she is getting more relaxed round him now & was watching them on the CCTV together & shes not moving off everytime he goes near her teats now :) Thankyou for the advice though :) :)

Hes feeding on his own now....yay :) Mum is much much happier & relaxed with him now. Foal watching is a good way to waste time though.

Im still not sold on the Moose name though lol :)

Gorgeous! Love Highlands. Will he stay that colour? I like the name Angus - Gus for short and very scottish. ;)
