Hi
I just wondered if anyone could give me some advise.
My bitch is about 14 years old and had a bit of a funny turn on sunday.
I was not there but my brother said her back end just went and she couldnt walk. She was just getting out of her bed but didnt slip or anything.
She was very stiff and lame afterwards on her back legs. We were going to take her to the vet today but took her out on sunday and she seems to have righted her self.
I had a feel of her back end and legs and she was very shakey (she can be a bit wimpy so that isnt too much of a concern)
She does have slight arthritus-needs a run up to get on the bed etc.
Could it be the arthritus, a knock or should i be worried???????
Sorry for the ramble but she is such a well dog usually but due to her age i am a bit concerned it could be something more serious!

I would think it's probably a lot to do with her age TBH.

My labs back end starting going last year. He was 12. Would just suddenly go out from underneath him. It was very distressing to watch.

Thanks i will.
She is just so fit and healthy in every way i sometimes forget that she is getting on a bit!

my 15 year old dog had the same problem... the vet diagnosed arthritis and he is now on strong painkillers which is making the world of difference. his legs would slip because they were too painful to walk on. definitely go and see your vet.

Might be the result of a small stroke, a girl I had, had a few aged 15, if they are small they usually right themselves but its worth chatting to the vet.

I did think of that- although i tried to put the thought out of my mind!
Would her behaviour not change if she had had a stroke- she is fine in herself now!
She is a bearded collie x- possibly with a lurcher! a bit of a mutt but i think that is why she had been so sound and well all these years.

This happenend to our dog, he was 15 and a collie x greyhound. He had 3/4 strokes and was on pills for it, We had a further happy year with him, he'd still come down the fields and play etc although he did get tired quicker and looked considerably old, after he had a much bigger stroke there was a huge change in his behavior and he started to go down hill which was when we unfortunatly had him pts.

Hope this helps?

Oh god- so sorry for you.
I really hope that isnt pippa's problem.
She is probably absolutly fine but i do worry! she still has loads of energy and leaps and runs around all the time.
Fingers crossed it was just a one off or a bit of arthritis,

FIngers crossed she'll be ok! From the sounds of it she's fighting fit and full of beans!

Having pets is the worst thing really, they don't half make you worry when there's the slightest thing wrong!

oh and sorry, hope my first reply didn't make you worry even more, being the insensitive person I am I didn't think of that till after I'd posted it!

Sounds like arthritis to me. My 15 year old catahoula has the same problem sometimes, especially if the floor is slick like tile or laminate. She is on arthritis supplements, Drs. Foster & Smith Level 3 and their Sr. vitamins. They have made a world of difference. Don't know if they ship to the UK but since the exchange rate is so favorable it might be worth checking. Or get a similar supplement available in the UK. Katie also takes the occasional Rimadyl for pain especially when the weather is cold and damp.
