back lifts/back excercises (for the horse)

In addition to carrot stretches - I have been doing some back lifts with my horse. The ones where you effectively tickle the sternum to make them lift their back. However the 'lift' isnt very noticible when she does so. Can anyone give me any recommendations as to how to increase the 'lift' and also if there are any other types of excercises I could try?

I've been told to stretch the hi d legs forward to each of the front hooves and hold for 15 secs and also if you scratch up the hamstrings to the point of buttock they should tuck their pelvis under and this is really good for stretching the lumbar muscles and the ligaments around the sacrum area. X
