Just wondering if anyone has had horses back or neck x rayed at yard? I know for best results they need a more powerful ceiling mounted machine but is it possible with a portable digital machine to get even a half decent shot?

Thanks :)

My horse had his spine and stifles x-rayed on the yard. He had to be lightly sedated, but according to the vet the images were good.

Yes... Dependant on the horse and the quality of the X-ray machine.

I had a tb done at the yard, wouldn't have worked on something more thickset.

Also bear in mind it can be considerably cheaper to have the X-rays done at the surgery - check on prices!

Thanks for the replies that is really helpful. Its not the cost thats the issue but my horse and her companion both have PPID and both are very affected by stress. So stress for the little one to leave her at home alone (couldnt take her with us) and stress for my horse to go to vets she doesnt cope well with things like that. She would need sedated anyway but she sedates very well and had hoof x rays at home before. Vet is out on Thurs to check her and discuss options but I am happier to know that we could at least try to x ray at home. :)

If the vets coming on Thursday I'd ask him to bring the machine if it's available... Save on another £50 call out few, or whatever your vet charges!

I normally would but have just changed vets half way through a case as I wasnt happy with the service from the vets I was using. Not something I wanted to do but wasnt getting anywhere and have a very unhappy horse :(
I havent met the new vet yet so didnt know if it was best just to have a consultation first? Its a complicated case......

Depends on the power supply at the yard to an extent (unless one of those super expensive van things with own power supply). Will also massively bump up the cost at a lot of practice's because the machine is unavailable for longer and the vet probably has to make a special journey.

If only generator power at the yard then not many practices will rick the xray machine.

Also has the issue of where you do it. Need to consider what is not protected from the xray beam.

Thanks for the replies. Slightyconfused I am sorry about your horses diagnosis but good to know that the xrays were clear. Wagtail she is a warmblood x TB she is only little but is quite broad backed..... Wishful, I have power, husband is an electrician we have power everywhere lol including in the field but have a good little sheltered spot in the yard at the back of the house.
