Back pain

Hi. Just looking for a bit of advice.
My gelding over the last 2 weeks has started showing discomfort on his back when grooming, tacking up and mounting(bareback). He does not show any discomfort when being ridden.
Does anybody know what may be causing this? Could it be his rug rubbing? Kissing spine?
He is a 9 year old standardbred and has a slightly roached back.

The best person to ask is your vet - and preferably, for your own safety while your horse is 'only' objecting to grooming etc.When mine (IDx) had a bad back she dropped me on the road on my head. Vet sorted it with acupuncture.
