Back partition in Ifor Williams falling down?

Took my horse showjumping training today and had a lovely time, was quiet as a mouse munching a haynet on the way home in the trailer, until about a mile from home when there was a lot of movement and banging. I stopped, looked in the jockey door and the back partion in the trailer had fallen down and this/the hind breast bars were now under his hind feet.

This has happened twice before, once when the trailer was empty and another time it happened as we left the yard with two horses in. I was since advised to swap the front and back portion of the partitions around incase they had been put on incorrectly by the previous owners which I thought had sorted the problem.

Has anyone else experienced this and any thoughts? I am not keen to travel without the back partition incase the reason it falls down is because he needs it to stabilise/with two horses I am concerned about them standing on each other.

It’s an Ifor Williams 510, around 13 years old. I have only owned this trailer a few months but my previous which I owned a short while (same make but a classic 510) I never had problems with.

Hope this makes sense!

Is it a swing partition? The "back" sits on top of 2 long hinge pins. I thought there was a stopper-nut on top to stop any horse getting itself underneath the bottom edge of the back and lifting it up off the hinge pin (which it sounds like yours is doing). Perhaps your stopper nut is missing.

Two things you can do. First - check your swing partition attachment with that of an IW of similar vintage - see if you're missing a stopper-nut or similar, see if there's any difference in free play/etc of the swing partition. If that doesn't help you suss what is wrong, then second thing, take it to an IW trailer servicer and ask for their advice.

I had this happen in a similar age 505. It's something to do with the pins that hold the partition in place, our 2006 model had different fittings which stops it being able to happen. Speak to an IW dealer they should be able to advise.

The partition will only hook on and lock properly if it is put on at about a 90 degree angle, and then swung back to the normal position. Otherwise it could bounce off in transit.

ETA This is how my 2006 510 partition works.

I think when the partition is swivelled into position the hook slots under a lug which stops it bouncing out.

Thankyou for all your replies, I know a few people with similar models so will compare and failing that ask a dealer.

From what I have seen so far there is no ‘stopper’ on the pins, will have another look and try mounting at 90 degrees, although the partitions are a very awkward shape and of just enough weight to make placing them alone difficult enough!

The stopper isn’t on the pins, it’s built in to the shape of the holes that the pins go through. If you look at the shape of the holes on the partition carefully, you’ll see that when you slot them onto the pins (at an angle as mentioned above) then swing them round into position, the shape of the attachment stops the partition lifting off.
