Pony fell over in canter and landed nose first on the floor over two weeks ago in the school. I went flying and he face-planted the floor. He seemed ok and I just gave him Bute that night a few days off.

All seemed to be ok but I noticed he was being a stiff to ride, so I got the vet last Friday and he said he had knots in his neck, shoulder and back. A very reputable physio was recommended by him and she came out two days ago. He was in quite a bit of pain but by the time she left, he seemed a lot more relaxed and she was pleased with his progress. She's told me 3 days off and then just small hacks in walk for 20-30 mins until she comes back to see him again next Friday (11th) as this will aid his recovery. She checked his saddle and confirmed that's fine (she does saddle fitting too) and it was the fall that caused the problems and his injuries were consistent with the description of the fall.

I'm meant to be riding him tomorrow on a 20 min slow walk out but today he's still wincing at me touching his back where it was sore. I don't want to ride him - surely I can't? Is this going against what the physio said? Has anyone had something similar and if so, how long/how many sessions did it take for them to become right? Help!

Could you walk him out in hand for twenty minutes instead rather than riding tomorrow? - will get him moving without worrying him if he is still in any pain. Perhaps give your physio a call and see what she thinks based on his reactions after the time off, but I would trust your instincts if you don't think he's ready to be ridden!

Thanks for the reply - I think that's what I'll do. I was going to ring the physio back and tell her he's still in pain but I don't want her to think I'm being daft. Never had a horse have a back problem before so I don't know whether it is bound to hurt him for a week or so following treatment (just going off how I feel when I go see the chiropractor!)

I think you know yourself that the horse is not right!!! i would defo give the physio a call she would want to know how he is getting on!! a good bruise will hurt for a while. try and look how he is walking is he straight or going across with one foot and not following threw or falling through his shoulder these are signs of back pain. Bruce Hewitt is very good!!!!! google him and it will explain all, good luck and please let us know how you get on xxxxxxx
