I work with horses and as most of you will know there's a fair anount of lifting heavy things/bending down/getting shoved around etc etc....

My lower back's been causing me some discomfort recently - I can feel it constantly but gets much worse when I try to lift something. It's been like this for a couple of weeks now and feels "weak" and is painful.

Can anyone recommend a back support that can be worn all day or let me know if you've had the same sort of thing (and what you did!)

Also, if I were to book to go and see a practitioner about it WHO would I be best to see.......I get confused at all the different types of people about these days!

Many thanks

I have a lot of back problems, and have considered on many occasions of getting a back protecter, however was advised against it by a chiropractor as apparently they can cause muscular weakness, which is the area which is usually causing the pain with horses. Therefore it would be better to be aware of how you lift thigns etc, but it was mentiond that a back protecter can help to make you aware of this, its just not best to rely on them full time.

My best advice would be to go to a mctimoney practitioner or chiropractor (I think, I get confused here too! lol) as they can straighten out anything that isnt straight and will also ease all the tight muscles and give you advice on the back protecter themselves. Only thing I found is, it was brilliant for about 3 days, then all of a sudden I started re-clicking and the pain came back, so I guess its something you need to do reguarly untill the muscles have become habituated... I hate backs!

Ah interesting!

My OH's a farrier and obvoiusly goes for regular appts with an osteopath - perhaps I will make an appt too!? I get confused as to which professional to see about which ailment

I've never had "back problems" really - but I've turned 26 in the last month - maybe this is a sign of getting older

Thanks for that info - I will look into all that!

I know how important it is to look after your back so I'm very happy to go and have regular treatment to keep everything "right". I try to lift with a straight back but some things are so heavy it's hard to. And now my lower back hurts it seems to hurt more when I straighten up if that makes sense!?

I thinkt he worst thing is the large water tub thingys - dragging those across the yard and then deciding it would be a good idea to lift the dman thing.....hmmm

lol horsey people do stupid things! Im extemely stubborn and refuse help and the OH gets very annoyed with me, But I know I can lift the heavy things so why would I need him to do it, but I do suffer at the end of the day. But your back sounds the same as mine. I also really feel it when I lie flat on my back at the end of the day, and I cant stand still for long periods anymore. Lol if it is a sign of getting older, im stuffed at the age of 20!!!

I think the old saying of once a bad back always a bad back is very true though

Yes - sounds similar!! I guess it's just part of working with horses....on the flip side I seem to stay quite fit....just like an groaning old biddy "ooooh me back!"

Have just ordered a Prolite back support - god knows whether they're any good....I'll give it a go though!

My OH had a bad fall when looking for a new horse. Now always wears a back support if lifting or moving anything he thinks will agrevate it. I bought it approx 3 years ago from Decathlon. Cost from memory then about £60.00 well worth it as he takes it to work and when doing things around the property. He used to wear it for riding as well. But Osteopath has told him not to ride for a while when he started going about 4 weeks ago. Told him this week he can have a walk out on the horse but no trotting or fast work hes right fed up.

Why don't you use a hose pipe ?

lol... I drag mine everywhere, my reason for not using a hosepipe... because I have to get that out and at the time it seems much easier to fill it up at the tap and drag the bucket back!

Ah - unfortunately I'm situated on the back yard where we have a osrt of hose attachment for filling buckets (have to run round to the front to plug it on/turn it off.....unfortuately would nowhere near reach into my stable

Same with one of the places I work unfortuately - hose just not long enough
grin.gif

Plus my darling horse is very wary of hoses/splashing water

I may resort to filling the large tubs using normal sized buckets and making a few trips.

God my life's exciting

I have a Prolite support for riding and I have a fracture at the bottom of my spine from when I had my daughter - yep she was a big girl! It's fab for keeping me comfy out hunting and boy does it give you a nice silhouette in your jacket! but it can be murder when you have to get off for a pee in the bushes, all those layers to be tucked in under / over it, and all that velcro noise gives the game away a bit!
