Can anyone recommend a schooling book that goes right back to basics in terms of getting a horse working from behind into a soft elastic contact, the correct aids for transitions, basic lateral exercises, etc etc. Would be very grateful for any suggestions/advice. Thanks.

Debby Lush has just released a new book - she teaches me and the book is great. I think you can get it on Tesco online - well worth it, explains really well with exercises to do as well.
