Backing a welsh sec A !!!

I know this sort of question is probably posted a thousand times but i need some advice, i brought my boys a section A with a fantastic temperament, but is an unbacked 3 year old, he has had lots of handling, i can now tack him up have bitted him, for the time being i don't want to do things to quick.

I managed to get on him yesterday without tack just to see if he would except someone on his back, and to my surprise he wasn't that bad! :) we had some bucking and bronkoing lol but that was it. But my question is i weight 10 stone is this to much for the little pony for me to back him or do you think i need to find myself a little light weight jocky? x
 
For light work I would expect 10 st to be OK - just be careful because I would assume that could be the equivalent of a 17 stone man on a large horse roughly.

I too have a 2yo Welsh A so would be very interested in comments here!
 
Depending on his height and chunkiness, yes it is a bit too much!

My welsh a mare is quite fine but tall and i wouldnt put anything above 7/8 stone on her including her tack but my friends could take a little more weight but i think 10 st is pushing it for a young unfit pony.

Where abouts it kent are you? I know lots of people that could help you :D
 
i'm 9 stone, and wouldn't be happy backing a young, unbalanced small pony. i do sometimes sit on iggle (shetland) and he doesn't bat an eyelid, but he's older and chunkier.

i'd look for a lightweight rider if i were you. you can get really teeny tiny adults (i have a friend who is 5ft and can't weight more than 6.5stone - witch...) or even a small teenager. they're usually mad brave too... ;)
 
I have little Sec A pony and when the time comes for him to be backed I have found a wonderful lightweight rider. She's actually a SJer but is small enough to back a littlie.

I do wonder if we're getting a little precious with these smallies though because I was told that the A's were the ones that took the farmers over their land in years gone by so if thats true they must be able to carry weight, unless of course we're more enlightened and considerate these days and don't put our ponies under too much pressure.
 
10 stone?..don't worry..he'd be fine.

people are getting far too precious these days, no wonder this board is full of inane "am i too fat for my horse" threads!!

since when did horses and ponies turn into glass?
i must have missed that part of evolution...;)

10st is just under a quarter of my welsh section a's weight! If you weighed 10st would you be happy carrying 2.5st around with you while your trying to walk/run ect? :confused:
 
your welsh A can't be very substantial then..

why do people feel the need to be anthromorphic?

we, incase you hadn't noticed are bi-peds, ponies quadrapeds..so are able to carry weights because their centre of gravity and weight distribution is far different than a human.

No she isnt, shes a spindly little thing! :p
I just feel that ponies shouldnt have to carry that much weight, especially while being backed a quarter of their weight or even a 5th of their weight is alot!
 
OP is i understand just going to back her pony..which then, i assume, would be ridden on/schooled regularly by someone younger/smaller.

if the pony was mine, i'd leave it til a 4yr old anyway.

Can we see a picture of him to see what type he is? How big is he?
 
I'm in the process of backing a section A at the moment, and have a 6 1/2 stone teenager riding him for me. I think once yours is backed and ridden away a bit and has muscled up and grown stronger through being ridden, then you could get on and continue his education, but for the next few months I'd try to find someone lighter - just my opinion.
