Hi all

I’m just looking for advice please. I have many years experience with horses and have set myself the challenge of breaking in a 4 year old Sec A that I’ve bought. I have a rough idea of the process but wondered if any of you would mind giving me a rough overview of your process?

The pony is leading well from the head collar, responding to voice commands etc.

Are the books worth it?

TIA x

I teach lunging next. Not for getting fit but for establishing that they have to behave themselves even with nobody stood at their head. A few very short sessions without tack then with tack achieves this. I lunge from a lunging cavesson even when the horses are wearing tack. After that I lead about for a few minutes with a rider then lunge with a rider for a few sessions until the horses learn to be ridden. So they are on the lunge but they understand leg and rein aids and the rider is in control not the person holding the lunge rein. Then it is time to build fitness hacking twice a week in company to start with and some very basic schooling once a week. Depending on the age and physical development of the horse I might stick with short rides at walk and trot for quite a while. I enjoy training up a new horse. Hope it goes smoothly with yours :)
