My horse is completely backwards. I have had him stabled for the last month or so, 24/7, although he gets turned out twice a day in the arena, and the last week I have started riding him again. When stabled, he is an angel, he's well mannered, behaves himself, does get a little lively, but he lets off steam in arena for a few minutes, and out ridden he's fine, doesnt hog the stable door or anything, and generally seems quite happy being stabled.

I have a crazy busy day tomorrow so decided to turn him back out with his friends (our other 2) in the fields for a few days to see how he goes, but he's just so nutty in the field. Previously he has jumped out the field twice, constantly rears up at my other horse, bites him (playfully - but it seems to wind my other horse up) and generally runs about a fair bit.
I worry all the time, that next time I get to the yard, he'll have jumped out again, hurt himself, or hurt my other horse...
Would it just be better to keep him in? If I kept him half and half, obviously he would go mad every morning when turned out. I'd obviously rather have them all out together all the time. Maybe he would be better on his own in a field next to them?

Damn horses!!! Lol, any advice welcome

My horse is very similar... I had to buy him a stallion pen as he just kept jumping out/climbing fences etc.

The stallion pen has worked a treat so he now goes out like all the others and gets his hoolies out but in a safe way.

If your yard will allow definately worth a try?

It's basically like a lunge pen - made up of 8ft high metal grates that all slot together so you can make the pen as big or small as you like. Ours is about 30m width, so not so big that he can get any speed up, but big enough that he can have a really good play!

You do have to find a flat-ish peice of land though, or dig it in, so that might be an issue, but I'm sure that there would be ways around that.

If you look on ebay you can buy used and 'damaged' wire safety panels from building sites. The damage is either repairable for anyone with a bit of patience, or so negligible to not matter. Daughers OH bought loads for £2 each and made them into enormous fox-proof chicken runs.

I dont really understand, lol, are you saying just turn him out in one of these pens, until he's calmed down, then turn him out properly? Or just use that as his turn out? Sorry if I'm being dense! :)

Hehe.. no worries! Yes - we just turn him out in one of these, otherwise he just uses the space to get as much speed up as possible and then jumps out/barges through electric fences/terrorises other horses!

He does not go out in one of the 'sensible horse' fields or he causes havoc (and huge vets bills!). I once found him in next door's 40 acre field with their mares having a great time. Took us about 3hrs to catch him... So into the stallion pen he goes! :)

We are in the process of gradually making it bigger...

Lots of people will say to turn a blind eye to it and that they will settle, but my boy never did in two years of continuous turn out, so a couple of years ago we bought the pen and haven't looked back. Not more vets bills (touch wood!).
