bad back or sensitive??

Hi, was looking for some advice, i have a 14.2 mare, 12 yo, i lunged her yest with saddle on when i took her in stable and gave her a grrom down i noticed she was dipping under pressure of brush just behind her last rib, but above it. i was wondering if this a natural reaction or if this is a sign of pain, she did on both sides. my other horse did not react to be running my finfer along his back. Today she was not as responsive to running my finger along her back, just wondered what people thought. She is tb x if that means anything. thanks xx

I had exactly the same problem with my Thoroughbred last week, she dipped when i was brushing her so i called the saddle man (checks backs too) and he obviously knew what buttons to push coz she was dipping like mad when he was testing her back.

He looked at my saddle and said it sloping back so all my weight has been on the cantle end but her backs really bad now so im giving her 1 1/2 weeks rest b4 a spinal therapist comes to access the damage and then a new saddle if we can get her right again. The therapist is suprisingly really reasonably priced.
Think id get it checked to be on the safe side, i think Thoroughbreds are so sensitive that if anythings not quite right then they'll feel it more than other breeds

agree - lower back pain. Usually from badly fitting saddle as Daisy Mae described.

Agree check your tack but if it's not related... Does it coincide with her season? She might have period pains some mares get really tender just before their season.

I can't offer any more helpful advice than to say that we are going through the same thing with Daisy. My chiro reckoned it was her saddle so we've changed that but she's still sore so we're going to the vets next week for tests. Do let us know what happens

i am riding a gelding who is 13 years old and on the yard is a dream to groom and to bring in and out of field but as soon as we put a saddle on his back he starts prancing around also when being ridden he walks and canters i think i have only trotted him twice now. the owner of the yard thinks as is a livery its just got use to being cantered everywhere but i don't so i will be intrested to see what you find out....

Hi, from what you describe there is pain over the loins? could be muscular, related to sacroiliac joint, or misalignments in the lumbar vertbrae. Hope some help, i would gte back and saddle checked asap.
