good morning everyone. I have just had a frantic call from my sharer who was stuck on a track with my very naughty pony who was refusing to go forward, walking backwards ect. so i talked her through it, a couple of minutes later she did it again, again talked the sharer through it and it seems they are now on their way. I had the same problem on sunday - she just planted her feet and said im not going! we sat there for ages p***ng about until a man and a dog came along, then she fell into step next to him and walked along like a riding school plod! She did this in march for about 2 weeks. I think she 'pretends' to be scared, as the things she suddenly refuses are things that she goes past every day of her life. Causing a lot of worry!
My question is - is this a 'mare' thing? Tack teeth back ect all done she is not young and most of the time hacks on her own and in company with no problems - ive not yet had her a year so im still learning about her. should we just ignore it and get her going however we can, or has anyone any statergies they use for this behaviour please. Any advise greatly appreciated. She is sooooooooo stubben and very strong - have her in a pelham with roundings. But really love her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s definitely not just because she is a mare!!! Sounds too me she is just playing up and getting her own way.
Do you have anyone that could help you, lesson eg??

Sorry i'm not much helpx

thanks for reply happybee - cant have lessons ATM as she has artritis and cant go in school until it settles down. i was hoping people were going to say she is trying it on = i dont want it to be a pain/insecurity issue x

This probably won't be much help, but my pony ocassionally planted his feet and when asked to move walked backwards. It's not because he's scared of things (his reaction is different if he's scared), it's usually just him being stubborn.

I went out riding with a friend walking along and he did it, and she said I was holding on to his mouth too much, and that's why he was going back, but to me it felt like I had my reins loose. My friend told me to throw my hands forward and kick; I did and off he went. I've since done this twice and both times it's worked. I was obviously tensing up very slightly when he stopped and he was feeling it and taking the pee, when I fling my arms forward off he goes.

Sounds like she is just being nappy and naughty. If you cant get her to go forwad turn her round in a circle and anything else but don not let her get her own way, mark my words, she will eventually go forward even if it takes an hour. She is just trying it on.

thats what i was telling sarah to do this morning - turn her round in a circle (although she isnt supposed to be doing circles with her artritis!) and at one point when she was going backwards i told her to turn her round and make her go backwards the way sarah wanted her to go - that confused her!!!! - head groom says she needs a swift wallop with the whip - but i have to say both me and sharer are a bit scared to do it as even a very small tap makes her jump like hell! (we are a couple of wimps!) I think im gonna have to bite the bullet and give her a smack (lets hope its just the bullet and not the dust!!!!)

I think we all go through this at some point! If feasible, I would just sit quietly for as long as it takes to get her to move forward. I wouldn't allow her to go in any other direction or, heaven forbid, eat grass! My mare went through this and I did what I've said and eventually she got bored and went on. It took AGES though!!!

my boy used to do this and i made him go backwards the way i wanted him to go - he soon stopped and but has just come back into work after a few weeks off and is doing it again both when ridden and in hand- so its back to the backwards trick again.

did it last night and so i made him go backwards all the way from his field to the yard as he wouldn't walk forwards - does work and is definitely them just taking the mick and saying they would rather stay in their field eating themselves into oblivion than go with you and face the prospect of working!

walder, maybe trying smacking your boot or something first before you use the whip on her? That way she'll hear the noise and that might send her forwards. If she ignores that then tap her with it, hopefully she'll learn that the noise of it hitting your boot is a warning.
