Bad Dust Problem in Stable

I have a major dust problem in my horse's stable. We have no problems in winter but as soon as the warm weather hits, it is really bad.

It's an outdoor stable, but there are metal beam type things and cavities where the dust settles and it is very thick. I use shavings and deep litter during the week, muck out at weekends. I have tried putting the whole bed up at weekends and using a brush to sweep the dust off from around the stable. Most of it falls into the middle of the stable so I can just sweep it out. However, it does get into the bed which in turn makes the bed dusty too. The dust is so bad when I am mucking out and using the brush to sweep off the dust on the beams etc, I cough like mad and have to keep going out of the stable.

I've heard that people often get a bowl of salt water and place in caravans etc when they are not around to prevent dust lying. Do you think something like this would work?

Does anyone have any other ideas pleas?

could you not try different bedding ? the wood pellets might be better for you, at yard im on everyone uses different bedding for what suits their horse, there's lots of different pellet type bedding out there- happy searching !

I've no personal experience with the salt water thing - I'm not sure how that would work. We hoover every 6 months or so. If you sweep a fair amount of the dust is airborne and will just stick back. The other option a couple of Friends at our yard have used really successful is a kercher pressure washer. Messy as heck but wet dust cannot become airborne again. Very effective!

Thanks for the suggestions. My livery cost includes bedding and the only option available is shavings, so wood pellets aren't an option for the moment. Never thought of using the hoover etc, might give that a go!

I bought a spray bottle this morning and filled it with salt and hot water and sprayed it over the bed and on the beams after cleaning them. If that doesn't work, I will get the hoover out and try that!

Weirdly u have a similar problem but all year round. I have 3 stables, all together and two are fine. One is horrendous.
Is the horse occupant a big roller? Ours is and I put it down to dried mud dust as that's all I can think it can possibly be!

She is a renowned roller! And my stable appears to be worse than the others. The other stables are pretty thick with dust too although the beds aren't as bad. Never thought about that actually! It's driving me insane lol.

I wonder if that's anything to do with it then? The only way I've been able to half deal with it is to use the best shavings I can get (obviously you can't just choose as they are included!). Then give only a small bed, which I really dislike but have rubber mats so the horse is ok. This enables me to run it down and replace the whole bed every other week or whatever.
It's the best I've been able to do so far!

Yeah it might well have something to do with it. I have rubber mats as well and quite a big bed. There is one side of bankings that I haven't cleaned out in a while, so think I will do that next weekend and carry on with the spray bottle to see if it makes a difference. I look like a crazy person spraying away at my shavings!
