Bad hoof wall bruising

My 15.3 ISH gelding aged 8 who lives out 24/7 and in light work of hacking 3 times a week with the odd short schooling session has awful bruisig on the outside wall of his near hind. He is unshod behind but regularly trimmed. Here is a photo:

Does anyone know what might have caused this?

What is his feed, and management? Is he pale footed?

Yes he has light feet behind (he's a piebald). He gets a scoop of hi fi good doer and Pro Hoof feed balancer daily.
