Last year Charisma's hooves were lovely and healthy, but this year they have started to crack rather badly! All her hooves are black, and the ones that are cracked are both her fronts.

I have some cornicresine (cant spell) which I have put on but perhaps I could be putting that on more often. I live next door now so no excuse!

Anything else you can suggest? My instructor said seaweed was good for hoof health but I've been using it for a few months and nothing has changed. She does look mighty healthy everywhere else though!

Thanks all xxx

Suggest you pop this question on the UKNHCP forum

Don;t use gunks and oils on the hoof - it won't get rid fo the cracks, but interferes with he way the hooves transpire. There is a moisture gradient in the hoof that acts as a vibration damper, oils interfer with that

Best thing for the hooves is plain water!

Am I reading this quote from your blog about this horse with cracks correctly LucyPriory?

"Extensive vet tests had revealed no probable cause other than psychosomatic."

I really cannot believe this! lol Who said that anyway?

Hi Amandap

Yes - as reported by the owner; apparently they spent a lot of money (or the insurance company did). No joy from farrier either.

I think this crack started as seedy toe, then without a proper roll every step just opened up the crack more and more.

There is/was evidence of an earlier attempt to stop the crack travelling higher but it hadn't worked.

All we did was apply a mustang roll as per AANHCP guidelines every four weeks and I showed the owner how to maintain it between visits.

The horse in question is now completely sound and is a complete doll to do (yes I am a bit fond of her I must admit).

The best bit is that horse and owner are so happy having been so down.

There is still more crack to grow out, but as it is no longer being opened up we are making progress.

Yes, I've got first hand experience of how this trim can help cracks (severe and numerous cracks) heal. It was the conclusion that the problem was psychosomatic that I can't believe!

Great progress on this hoof too btw.

The best bit is that horse and owner are so happy having been so down.
I know that feeling of relief and joy being an owner in this sort of position a few years ago. I will be grateful to my then Trimmer/lifesaver forever.

I have another horse/client in the same area with an equally bizarre diagnosis. If it is the vet I think it is then I met them over 20 years ago when a horse with thrush was diagnosed with kissing spines. RVC were gobsmacked at the time but the vet is still practising.

There are good and bad in all professions. I am lucky with the vet for my horse. Very very lucky. But then he also thinks I'm a witch............. :-) It's just I've replaced the broom with a rasp LOL

Yay - agree with the roll, it is after all what the horses would do if we let them live a more natural lifestyle. Best thing for seedy toe, but you can't do it with a shoe on.......
