Had the vet out today to do jabs on my youngster and check up on my old boy.

Bad news number 1: Old boy is retired and lives out with my youngster 24/7 with excess to field shelter with big straw bed so got the best of both worlds.
He has alot of joint problems and is on two danilion per day which has, up until this summer with all the hard ground, kept him happy. Went down hill two months ago, long story short also has cushings so now on meds for that. Picked up and looks fantastic and is very happy but still lame. Had a long chat with the vet and he thinks it would be nice to give him a couple of months of the autum and hopefully soft ground?! but doesn't think he will cope with another harsh winter. I agree. This is a very much respected vet in my area and will always try everything for the horses and I hold there opion with alot of respect. So looks like after nearly 18years together I will be saying goodbye to my litttle man :(

Bad news number 2: My vet thinks my little colt is stressed and gelding would help him. I was intending on keeping him for stud as he is very well bred, great movement and temperment etc. I think he may be a bit stressed because I have had to move them twice recently (lost grazing!) he is however very clingly with me and the vet picked up on this. I'm a bit gutted as I don't want him to be a stressy fella and if it means being two stone lighter then so be it. I think I will give him a bit of time to settle again before I make that call.

Not really asking for any advice just needed to get the morning off my chest. :o

Oh no big hugs xx Your doing the right thing xx

I know your not looking for advise and maybe i may be well out but would you by any chance be able to get something younger to keep your colt company and maybe someone for him to play with? This might help him out with the stress if he has another youngster to take his mind of you?

Thanks for the hugs!

Lila -I think your advice is spot on and am actually going to see another youngster this weekend as been thinking the same as you. Both my boys were very happy and playfull until my old boy had his blip two months ago. :(

If anyones know of a youngster who is looking for somewhere to live, gelding or colt only please pm me. I'm near St Albans Hertfordshire.

I'm sorry to hear about your old boy, you can only do what's best for him though.

If the youngster was mine I'd be giving him time to settle, some just don't like change. My 12yo gelding gets very stressed & clingy if things change & it will take months for him to relax, I can't see that he'd have been any worse as a stallion as it's just part of his personality.

That's what I thought Mrs M!

I think it all the testosterone. It increases their desire to herd you and claim you as their's  I just see him as a very friendly cuddely colt but have noticed he gets anxious when I'm not spending time with him.

I'm gonna let him settle as I don't think the vet is aware of all the moving, forgot to explain that what with taking it all in about the old fella, so we shall see!
