Bad News on the lorry front

Wehad bad news todaya fter putting our beloved lorry in for a pre mot. Its been fab for the last year, always starts first time and trundles us all over for our shows. We were prepared for a bit of expense as its quite old but have been quoted £1200 for all the work! Yikes! Apparently it needs new front kingpins and relined brakes. My friend and I are distraught!! We love our lorry!! dont know whether to sell it on ebay without the mot or get the work done? Anyone else been in the same position?
 
Have a look on Horsemart & other sites as to how much a lorry like yours would cost to replace. Then have a look on Ebay at prices for lorries without MOT, I'm afraid they don't go for much money.

It is alot of money to pay for repairs to your lorry but any other one you buy could have a similar set of repairs coming up soon. It may be best to pay & keep your lorry on the road. At least when to work is done youi will have less faults to worry about in the future.
 
Thats what we're figuring, and then we would have to try and find alternative transport and probably spend out more money. Im just gutted cos everything is just so expensive! Thanks for the sound advice, sometimes you just need soemone to talk practically!
 
if its been a trusted and reliable lorry i would stick with it, you could be opening another can of worms so to speak with another lorry.
 
I'd personally get another garage to quote. £1200 for just that work is very expensive. I have just had my brakes re done and a few other bits and it only cost £275. Although it was £60-70 for parts and the rest labour!

If it makes you feel any better, our lorry's brakes cost £1,500. V v annoyed cos we had a full svc before we took lorry & 2 horses on hol to make sure it was safe. Failed mot a month later cos a corroded brake fluid line had let all the stuff leak out, so the 'normal' brakes had failed, then the air brakes were trying to do the work of the other brakes too, so they failed as well. What the f was the guy doing that he didn't notice a corroded brake fluid line??? In a svc costing £750?? So there we were, swanning round Gloucester with all its hills, 2 horses on board & not realising that it was a deathtrap.

So now someone else services our lorry!

Incidentally our new lorry cost £800 top get thru its MOT this year & there was virtually nowt wrong with it... I'm afraid that lorries (and horses) are just moneypits.
 
We bought a lovely R reg lorry 6 months ago.It has just been for its first plate with us and it has cost £2500 to get it through. It needed new caliphers new drums new pads and some new bushes. We have been told by the garage it must have had a dodgy plate last year,they told us they had hardly driven it since plating ,but as it was a private sale we had no proof. To top it all the brake pads we had fitted still failed and it cost another£500 to get them changed although we are trying to claim for that against the manufacture.

Our old lorry G reg always went through with about £400 worth of work. So be very careful.
 
I paid £1200 for my lorry's annual service / MOT recently. It had a new exhaust but apart from that there was nothing much needed doing. The labour was £600 and there was VAT too, so probably only about £300 in parts
