Has anyone had a horse react badly? I know it does happen, but I've not experienced it before so currently very worried!

Vet came yesterday and jabbed at about 3pm, at half 5 I went to catch in again and he was stood in the corner of the field looking thoroughly miserable. Bought in, tied up on yard and he was trembling all over. Free schooled him quickly to see if he was just cold and he was lethargic but shivering stopped. Stood back on yard for a minute and was shivering again... Took temp... 41! Called vet who came out shortly after and gave him a jab of finadyne, by this point he was just uncomfortable, resting leg after leg, not standing in his usual spot, although would come and pick at his haynet he just wasn't his usual self. Went back and checked about 11pm, was much happier (although dripping in sweat, good job the vet warned the finadyne may do that!) and temp down to 37.4.

This morning, happier, would say normal despite a cough on the way out to the field, temp of 38.3, vet said fine.

Fast forward to now... Just caught him in, was grazing and came over as usual. Though hurrah he's feeling better... Stood on the yard and started trembling again. Put him in his box and immediately went to his hay, rugged up and shivering stopped. Seemed normal, but his temp is now 39.9!? Just gave him his dinner which he ate fine but has now gone back to shifting his weight from one leg to another, just uncomfortable looking...

I've texted the vet to ask if this is normal, but thought I'd see on here if anyone has had this before. Does it usually take a few days to leave their system?

yes, I had it in my last horse when the practise changed brand. thought he had GS at first, was standing base narrow, very reluctant to walk forward. when I realised he couldn't lower his neck I twigged-had to raise food and water for him until I could get bute off the vet.he was very sore bless him but with only a slight swelling where he was jagged.
it should pass but best you speak to vet as obviously discomfort can lead to colic.

This happened with my lad, very frightening. Once he had had bute he was fine. He is due in July so will request some bute just incase when I book it.

Yes, my mare had a bad reaction - her loaner phoned me straight away to let me know .

She had a huge swelling, had a temperature and was shivering. She was also very quiet, which is most unlike her.

I am not sure what manufacturer it was (I can find out) but the vet went back to them about the reaction because it was so severe, and they settled the vet bill - which was a welcome surprise!

Yes, mine reacted badly last year, very stiff and lethargic two days after. Off food and just not right.

He's not easy to inject iv so we gave him oral bute and improved very quickly xx

Yes, one of mine has had a reaction a couple of times. He is very lethargic and reluctant to lower his head.

I know it might happen so I'm ready to keep in with food and water elevated plus Bute. I get him vaccinated in the morning so I can see how he is in the afternoon and then take necessary action if required

I had a Dales pony that collapsed a few hours after a vaccination, his temperature shot up and he couldn't stop shaking. We never gave him that brand of vaccine again and he was fine from then onwards. It was horrible at the time, he was so, so unwell.

Yes, my mare did. Vaccine was a brand I'd not heard of before and asked for a different one next time. I got as far as running bloods as she just didn't seem to be picking up after a couple of weeks. I also was advised to give bute before the next one and afterwards.

Thanks all, glad it's not totally unheard of! He's just not himself, better than yesterday, but still not quire right. I gave him some bute as vet advised to. He's also just been away for the weekend at riding club camp so perhaps he was feeling a bit tired and low and the vacc has just tipped him over!

It's his birthday tomorrow... No partying for him!!

Mine had a bad reaction last year not right unable to move neck off food , thankfully no reactions this year and did it in his chest this time hope he's ok

One of ours always reacted with flu-like symptoms - temp, depression, swollen glands. Also reaction at vaccination site. Now we give just him bute starting night before til day after and he's fine.
