I have a problem with my mare and flu jabs, whenever she has them she gets flu! She runs a temperature, her coat stares, coughs, the lot! But my problem is this, I want to do veteran classes with her and have got BYRDS squadding soon and she NEEDS to be jabbed! I cannot put her through that and she takes so long to recover bless her.
Are there any alternatives at all that you know of? Or has anyone else got this problem? Im desperate. :(

Again have you talked it through with your vet.

I have a friend who horse reacts to flu jab. He runs a temp and goes all sleepy etc. Wheb he got his jab this year the vet gave him steroids and stuff to see if it helped and he was better this time round.

In some disciplines you can get an exemption provided it is recommended by your vet. Some FEI horses, for example, have been let off the 6 month jabs because they can't take it. "Herd immunity" is what matters - as long as a high percentage has been done then the herd is safe. Perhaps check with BYRDS?

You can get different brands and types of injections - talk to your vet. There's something called a subunit vaccine which apparently is better for some horses that react to the more standard ones.

Hey, sorry have been so quiet have had all sorts going on! Havent asked my vet yet, mainly wanted to know how many other people had this problem with their horses. I have heard it is hereditary....which I hope it isnt as we have her 2 year old daughter  but I fear this will be the case as apparantly it comes from my mares sire. Have not questioned BYRDS as unfortunately the communication from them leaves alot to be desired! So its a little like pulling teeth, especially as Im very new to it. Vet is coming in a few days anyway so will grab him and ask! Thankyou though everyone :)

one of mine takes a reaction, i give him thuja a few days before on the day and a couple of days after, this seems to help a bit
we have found one that seems to give him less of a reaction, think its equip would have to double check - duxavyn is a no go for him, he was really ill with it & i think prequenza it was that made his neck swell up for 3 weeks
my problem is that neither of the two local vets stock the one that is best for him now so i am going to have to call round other vets in the area and see who has it:rolleyes:
