hello, i hope someone can help. My 18 year old mare has suddenly got patches of hair coming out and turning into open sores, it is happening on both sides of her body. This has never happened befeore and I haven't see her itching and have checked for lice but can see nothing. I changed her rug thinking it might be too tight, she is a little overweight. It can't have been what her rug was washed in as all her rugs were done at the same time and its only started happening. I have been using hibiscrub and antiseptic black powder as i don't want to use a cream as she is still rugged as it is so cold. Really baffled, any advice would be much appreciated.
i do have picture but don't know how to attach it??

Hi, i have been dealing with a similiar skin complaint on my donkeys skin. No itching, no lice, not on any hard feed not rugged. The patches vary in size from between 2mm - 5mm and appeared just on his nearside flank about 6 weeks ago. The spots form very crusty scabs and on removal along with a clump of his hair appear to be circular in appearance, pink, with a hole in the centre - almost like an injection mark - weeping slightly, occasionally with a small plug of sebum. He suffers from fly bites in the summer and the vet recommended to remove scabs to prevent infection. I have been dealing with these spots by removing the crusts, any surrounding hair, cleaning with a mild dilution of hibiscrub and spraying with oxytetracycline. This regimen has, so far, been a success.

? blazing saddles sounds a bit like ringworm on your donkey, boomslang if your mare is of good weight then i would try to get her rug off at least in day and query ringworm? is your vet due for anything else? have you tried canestan on the sores? this will deal with ringworm but not as quickly as imaverol (POM) from your vet.

Had the vet out in the summer regarding fly bite reactions. These spots are very similiar in appearance to those. Am keeping a close eye and if it worsens will ask the vet out again. I will certainly keep your suggestion in mind though!

Are you 100% certain it's not lice? Right time of year and right symptoms. It's very hard to see lice. I'd be tempted to Frontline spray - repeat after 10 days to zap eggs - and wash all rugs, numnahs and grooming kit just to see if it makes a difference. Lice are easily passed from horse to horse and can reside in wood too so you'd need to do a survey of your whole yard.

Friends 26 year old mare has same problem .Vets been out been treaed with antibiotics and fuciderm and waiting for results of swab.Vet didnt think it was lice or mites maybe fungal. If its fungal you will need something from vet
