It takes things a long time to heel unless you leave them out and do not touch them - if it is not painful, and it is not getting worse I would not worry too much - just monitor it.

The best thing you could do for the pony in the long run is buy him a rug which fits correctly.

Bit unfair that - my horse has the most ridiculous number of rugs all fit him - he has gone from 5'9" as a 4 year old and is currently 6'6" as a 7 year old so all of his rugs are new modern ones, but he still gets bad rug rub on his shoulder even though all of his rugs have shoulder pleats - I would like a good suggestion for this as well - any cures gratefully received - he also has lycra and padded bibs but they don't seem to prevent the problem at all! He gets a bit bald rather than raw skin but it still looks horrid!

Where is the rug rubbing issy? If it is at the withers you do need to get a new rug - if the shoulders it might be down to your pony changing his/her coat for a winter version. They all get a little scruffy at this time of year and again in Spring.

Has the rug rubbed before or is it a new one?

If his skin has come off I would leave him without a rug in the day if not clipped for the time being, it is actually not that cold- and just rug at night. I'm sorry to agree with the people that say buy a new rug...some rugs are narrow at the front and just dont fit - Its just like buying 2 size 12 tops and one being tighter round your boobs! Sounds sore though if you have had to put cream on it….so as much air as possible I think. Ooooh poor pony the thought is making me cringe a bit! If you have a rug that does fit, like a fleece or summer sheet, use that as an under rug and see if the rubbing stops. If you have to rug then I would rug with an anti cast roller in the day and fold the polywarm up and away from his chest.... again, so the air gets to the rubbed bits x

Some rugs suit and others dont. Its a matter or trial and expensive error. If the rub is bad, it sounds like the rug needs to go as the pressure is still there even with protection underneath. Horses change shape and a perfectly good rug can suddenly cause problems, that why I think we all have a bit of a collection what with weather, growing and horses changing shape.

I would be tempted to invest in a rug with a fitted full neck as they seem to cause the least problems.

It sounds like you have a bit or a problem on your hands, good luck with it. I agree with you for trying other things before forking out for another rug (which may do the same). If you have any friends with rugs that would fit your horse, have a try on before you buy.

I am currently back and forth to the shops for my yearling (nothing fits!!!)

Good luck

I agree with the buying two size 12 tops thing and am sure that rugs differ greatly too. I have only ever bought Weatherbeeta for my chunky Welshie and have never had any rubs at all...he is unclipped and there is not even any shortness of hair...perhaps a different brand of rug may help...do you know anyone that has the same size rug that you could try out?
The problem is that even if the wound is left to heal by not rugging...it will probably come back again when the rug goes back on!
