We were doing some working hunter yesterday and I saw some appalling behaviour. One child's pony was napping going into the ring so out came the whip, whack, whack ,whack ,you effing pony and other bad language she then managed to jump a clear and then nearly mowed someone over as she came out of the ring and yelled at them. Sadly this child got placed 6th beating some children who had behaved impeccably. I found this apalling and to me seems to be sending out wrong messages about what is acceptable behaviour. It just reminded me why I don't enjoy showing.
Apologies for rant just needed to get it off my chest.

Sorry but I would swear and beat a pony for napping too

not sure what else you are supposed to do, get a carrot on a stick and cox it into the ring?

As for coming 6th, in workers a clear round will usually get you placed, the point is the horse could jump and it beat horses that couldn't or horse that could but didn't have as good confo. Showing isn't about a horse's manners as it entered the area or the 1/2/3 year old colt class would be cancelled every time!

I have agree with you ffgl. There is absolutely no excuse for that sort of behaviour and if princesssparkle1 agrees with that sort of behaviour it is probably because she was riding the horse herself!

I think you have misunderstood me. This child was excessive and her language was foul. She was well in the ring and continued to whack the pony. The other children who she beat had also jumped clear rounds and their ponies had shown manners. And I'm afraid I don't think it is ever acceptable for a child of about 10 to be swearing ( we are not talking mild language here)
I also would tell off a naughty pony but certainly not like she did.

Tricy subject. But here are my thoughts. I don't agree with "wack, wack, wack", I don't agree with a 10 year old swearing and I don't condone swearing; but I would give my horse a smack for napping. If he dosn't listen to my leg he gets a smack. Simple.

I have also witnessed some appaling sights like that in the 3 years we have been at our local riding club

We have seen children AND adults swearing , throwing tantrums and excessivly whacking their horses/ponies :crazy.

And I hate to see someone do what you saw in a show ring and get placed above well mannered riders and their ponies .

i agree that a pony napping should get a smack but not a continual whack whack whack , and as for a ten yr old effing and jeffing, thats not nice at all, I'm surprised she wasn't asked to leave the ring. My daughter has been known to swear at her mare when jumping and its damn embarrasing (although she is nearly 18 not 10!)

I agree with you I would give a pony a smack if they were napping but this is not what I was seeing in this instance.
It was interesting because a little later another childs pony was napping and she turned him round used her legs and when he didn't go gave him one quick smack and got him going forward , no swearing or excessive thwacking and then when he was going she praised him. The difference in behaviour was astonishing, so much so that she got applause for it!

Sorry Mr Parelli, did I offend you with my use of traditional methods? Yes I think a horse should get a smack for napping, if it continue to nap then it gets another smck and so on until it learns that the only way to avoid smacking is to go forward.

A ten year old would not be able to hit a horse very hard, we are not talking an adult with a schooling whip beating a horse until it marks (which I have seen at various afficliated comps, no one seemed to care that they went on to win)

As for swearing each to their own, some kids swear other don't. I got dumped across country at 11 and my language was choice to say the least, the jump judge that tried to help me back on looked horrified but as far as I was concerned my pony was a little f*cking b*stard for his dirty stop.

And to the person that thinks my horse must nap for me to have this attitude, no she doesn't nap in any way shape or form.

OMG!!! thats disgusting! WHERE were the parents?

I think that anyone-regardless of age-who behaves like this should be eliminated.

My god... obviously you lot are all angels with the ability to communicate with your horse on a purely telepathic level!!

My first pony was a severe napper. She would just stand there and go up on her back legs continually. Yes, of course she got a damn good hiding. We have video of her going up and down like a yo-yo and me going "this" thwack "is" thwack "not" thwack "funny". And yes... I did try other things first but as most of you should be open minded enough to know each horse responds to different things. I couldn't do this with my current horse as confrontation just doesn't work with her. And my EXTREMELY good and well respected riding instructors also encourged me to hit her... but yes, they were proper BHS instructors rather than parelli fanatics.

And I'm sure all of your language is soooo perfect when your horse is arsing around and humiliating you. Clearly the way which the girl dealt with this behaviour worked as the horse went forwards and did a clear round. And as PS said how hard can a 10 year old hit? Its not like some 6 foot guy beating a horse.

But then maybe I've just been extremely cruel to all of the horses I've had as I actually am not scared to use my whip.

hum, i must be the most evil women you guys have come across as if my mare naps or rears i smack her and shout at her (admitably i don't swear) and this has worked because now as soon as she begins to nap if i squeeze her sides she doesn't.

as for where the girl came unfortuantly it goes on what the judge likes on the day.

Mr parelli here

, I bet you would beat a child too... no your just digging a hole.. I would say what separates the best horse people from the also rans is a great empathy with the horse, An understanding of how it is thinking and wether the horse is scared or being naughty, punishing a scared horse just reinforses that fear.. and hence one reason why someone comes 6th and not 1st ... Im not sure what you mean by "Traditional" methods but it dosent sound like good horsemanship to me ... Its a shame this child is being taught so badly... both for the horse and especially for the kids future...

LOOOL... ah, I do like it when people make me laugh on a Monday morning!

So yes, I would hit a child if it was being a little sh!t. Just as I'd hit a horse for being a little sh!t. My pony knew better... I knew her well, my instructors knew her well and she needed a good wallop.

And as for thinking I have no empathy for horses you are talking out of your arse. As I've already stated different horses respond to different methods... its the empathy that allows you to see what works for each horse. As I (also already) stated I very very very rarely use my whip with my current horse even though she can be VERY naughty at times as it just doesn't work, all it does is make things worse. Also, I've managed to get a tune out of horses that lots of other people have failed on... clearly I suck as a rider :P

[/ QUOTE ]

Ok horse's are not children, you do realise that? I would smack a child not that I think it's the same thing but I was smacked and it never done me any harm. I wouldn't beat a child until it bruised, if we are making comparative that would be like hitting ahorse til it marked, which I am against.

I would not swear at a child as children learn to speak and would then learn to swear (well quicker than they do from other children) a horse on the other hand can tell no difference between you yelling 'Oh please don't do that you little ball of furry fun' and 'You f**cking little B*satrd, do that one more time and I swear I'll send you to the knacker man' for animals it's tone of voice so the swearing really isn't abuse, it's the shouting in general that affects the horse.

And just becasue a child choose to smacked a pony does not mean that it is not empathetic of the ponies feelings, all humans feel empathy that's what makes us human. It's not something we can switch on and off, it is something we can ignore or put aside. Children cannot do this as easily as adults, if the child felt that it had geniunely hurt the horse I'm sure he/she would feel guilty afterwards.

I was swearing at my lad on Saturday.. I don't carry a whip but I did swear an awful lot but then again I don't approve of rearing

I dont have a problem with this type of encouragement at all-AT HOME. I think there is a time and a place for it.

Jeez, Bondi was a right little shite yesterday and got a good wallop from me but I would never dream of doing such a thing at a show. If things werent going right for me, I'd bow out gracefully and go home and work on what went wrong. I certainly wouldnt make a complete show of myself at a comp.

I think you would be very much in the minority if you would bow out just because your horse was being a stubborn git. Pay all that money then go home because you're too embarassed of what other people might think? Unfortunately there are things that you just can't practise at home.

Fing and blinding at shows is not nice, as there are children present.

As for a few cracks with a whip, nothing wrong with that if the horse was taking the Micheal, however more than 3 hard cracks is my eyes is beating, again not something I wish to see anywhere let alone at a show as it sets a bad example to young impressionable riders.

Makes you wonder if what there like at home if they tone it down in public places doesn't it.

Well its not a child etiquette class. I think the "then managed to jump a clear round" sums it up really. Capable pony was being a git, child gave it a bo**ocking, it did a nice round. Well done child. It does sound like the parents need to instill some manners though, and I hope the pony got some sort of reward when it did do the job.

Absolutely agree if a horse is napping then it should get a smack, if i was waiting to go in the ring whilst someone spoke lovingly to their ill behaved pony who is obviously not going in the ring - it would probably drive me to swear!

How does everyone discipline their ponies then if they dont ever smack them? I know my "angel" when being schooled was smacked 3 times "whack whack whack" if you like - he wasnt a neglected case nor was he beaten just for the sake of it, he was very well cared for very well mannered and very very happy!

What a crock of s4it, why on earth does every saddle shop sell whips? A fashion accessory maybe??

Children swearing however is absolutely disgusting and i dont condone it!

My dad was very strict about this kind of thing when I was little. If I ever had any kind of tantrum/cried/swore the pony went back on the wagon and we went home!! I only did it the once!!

I don't think this is about smacking or not smacking but people really should try and behave themselves at competitions - even if it's only to stop themselves looking like a complete tit!!

ditto ^^^ and add if this pony is nappy and doesnt get TOLD to go forward it could cause serious injury or damage to either said child or another person or horse, as there is usually only Very obvious methods workable with Nappy horses/ponies due to them having pretty much No Reasoning at the point of nap!!

Ive actually had a nappy horse run over myself and my horse due to the rider using non firm/obvious methods and being totally out of control!! My horse would deffo get a tap if any resistance, and if was non responsive he would get more encouragment!!

Not so much embarrassed of what people think, but what is the point of me going into the ring with my horse being a complete arse?
Like I said I dont have a problem with it at all, its the language thing that bothers me more than anything. If a horse is napping, give it the encouragent that it warranted and get the job done.
If the horse is point blank refusing to behave and do whats necessary then thats when I'd call it a day.

(sorry-wasnt very clear before at all-my bad

)

I think the child mentioned in the OP sounds like an obviously compentent child, but if that was a child I knew he/she would be getting a severe talking to over their language.

When someone is competing at whatever level they are doing so in front of members of the public.

It would be sending out a very bad signal if someone repeatedly hits or sewars at their pony.

One smack is enough but asny more than repeated ones is excessive and should result in being disqualified.

The same goes for bad language. Any bad language on the show ground or course should result in disqualification.

People have got to learn to be restrained and if they can not then they get disqualified.

Riding must be seen as a clean sport and bad behaviour should not be tollerated.

So what was the point in amcking the horse in the first place it learnt nothing??
I once saw what i thought was bad horsemanship, a horse was being backed and asked to go forward on the lunge, the very competent horseman tapped the horse and asked it to go forward the horse didnt so he continued more agressively each time. I questioned the necessity of the so called beating, his reply "If i asked for something and the horse didnt respond then what would be achieved if i stopped, he would have been beaten for nothing and learnt nothing, then tomorrow we'd have to go thorugh the whole thing again" That i completely understood - and would encourage his methods
