i was getting good at riding bare back, i really struggled to get my balance to start with but over the last week i was getting quite good and it was improving my riding no end.
i decided to have a little go this morning but it didnt go so well... i asked tink to trot and she rushed off. i made the big mistake of letting the contact go to grab her mane and gripping with my legs!! this resulted in her taking off round the school like a motorbike  i ended up clinging on to her neck for dear life :o
understandably she got herself into a state ( someone on her back, squeezing her forward and hanging her on her neck... i dont blame her!) and decided she wanted me off  she starting arching her back and bucking! i am still not sure how on earth i stayed on! for some one who can hardly trot round with no saddle on i thought i did pretty well! she eventually stopped and i turned her to the side of the school and jumped off quick

part of me thinks i shouldnt of got off, or i should of got back on at least and just walked around. now i dont feel like either of us are going to want to do it again! and i was really enjoying it too!

back to saddle with no stirrups for the time being i think!

I find that walk and canter are fine bareback but trot is awful. You'll get there, don't worry.

That reminds me of a time that I was riding my big girl bareback when she decided that not only did the numpty up top not have a saddle but she had also put a bitless bridle on. Big girl fancied going home and nothing and nobody was going to stop her. So she took off at a sedate canter, jumped a puddle then cantered up a hill, came to an abrupt stop in front of her stable then put her head down to topple me off the front.

i has assumed canter wouldnt be as bad as trot but she has such a terrible canter still that i wasnt ready to try it! well, not purposely any way

love your story, at least your girl was more gentle with how to get you off! :p

What about getting a bareback pad made out of grippy suede with an emergency handle?

a friend has offered me the use of her bareback pad. i might give it a go. i schooled without stirrups the other day and then took her saddle off and it seemed to do the trick as i was riding round great! i guess it just all went out the window today and now im going to be a chicken about trying it again! :o

B1 has smooth paces and is very kind to me bareback so I quite like riding her bareback, I do sling a neck strap on though. B2 has such high withers I really don't like it much! Have the odd lazy canter to the field in rugs but that's about it.
