So according to the weather folk we are very likely to have a white christmas, and by the end of the week arctic blasts will be moving in. Is anyone else gutted by this? I have been looking forward to hunting over the festive season for soo long and now it looks doubtful whether it will happen at all! We have already lost so many days because of the weather and we are barely halfway through the season yet! Is anyone else extremely annoyed by the possibility of an 'idyllic' white christmas or is it just me?? ):

I am annoyed about it. i was going off competing this weekend and now it looks like snow/ice will stop play. Our menage is frozen over when it gets cold so we can't ride at all. Frustrating.

As I have said in a previous post the seasons are particularly topsy-turvy.

Because everybody is 'trail' hunting there is nothing to stop any hunt from going on into May.

Indeed I once had a memorable hunt after an early May travelling dog fox - before the act.

So be of good cheer, think about some grand spring hunting when the ground is ideal and scent can be extremely good, as the earth warms and lifts the vapours. :D

Why not? There are a few where the geography and some farming activities might need to be considered carefully.

However, in a dreadful season as we are having, 'the hunt' will need to a) give subscribers their money's worth and b) glean as many caps and day visitor subs as possible in the spring, that have been missed this back end.

Therefore in those circumstances the majority of hunts will find of necessity -financially, they are going to have to go on into the spring, indeed early May.

No doubt in those circumstances all concerned will co-operate, won't they? Notwithstanding pressure from the membership wanting to go on into the spring.

I know I will a get a lecture from you about lambing etc, but what I said was in the context of trail hunting and trail hunting can be organised away from lambing etc.

That's all well and good if you live in a wooded, moorland or arable country but when the land you hunt over is livestock land, the farmers would string you up if you dared set foot on it after mid March.

Agree. We can't for one and many others can't either. Why do you think so many migrate down to Exmoor where they can go on for far longer?

You can't expect farmers who have livestock to be pleased by your cavalier thoughts even though it might be alright for others to carry on.

i find your post both ignorant and patronising- yes we will be in the thick of lambing with just my poor hubby to cope, also the cattle will be out and we dont have subs- so put a sock in it!!!

I am well aware of the issues concerning livestock after March

That does not preclude carefully selected trails, which may very well end up as a hack round the countryside. Nevertheless for many hunts that is the way of things and folk may enjoy such spring perambulations.

If spring hunting/trailing cannot be organised away from livestock then it is a pretty poor show. A little imagination is needed.

No Rosie, I will not "put a sock in it" as you prosaically put it!

And why JM would a fox..presumably a dogfox..be travelling in May?? They are mating from now onward till February..that`s when the "boys" travel. Take hounds out during/after lambing..Bloody Hell..they`d be like a pork chop in a Synogogue roundabout here.

Exactly!! JM appears to be SO ignorant about the FACTS of hunting, I often suspect he/she is an anti troll!

I'm not sure about that JG and EK - anti trolls are usually better informed than JM..... ;P

I've never taken any notice of JM since I discovered that the majority of his "opinions" and "information" was gleaned from wikipedia, that notoriously accurate website :)

There's no way we could be hunting into May - too much stock out in small enclosures - no way we can avoid lying trails through fields full of lambs - the ground is too wet to justify angering the farmers whos goodwill we rely on for the whole season.

Last season, we hunted an extra day a week (3 instead of 2) once the snow had gone - that's the only way we can begin to make up the financial losses to the hunt - missing the "big" meets of Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Year's Eve as well as the other ones over the Christmas period is a huge blow to the hunt finances.

I am meant to be out tomorrow but it is meant to rain/snow heavily all day and I don't think it is going to be worth risking it. So gutted as I have a new horse which I got in October and due to the snow and fog I have still not yet been a ble to take him out!! argghhh! Hunting being cancelled due to weather is the most frustrating thing ever, especially as the season always seems to go so fast :( :(

Same here- most of our country is in Leicestershire with loads of sheep so I can't imagine they would be able to get farmer's permission to cross their land, and also most subscribers are farmers who will be working back on their farms for lambing and so wouldnt get the benefit of their subscriptions even if the season was extended! Fingers crossed we do not lose the festive meets

i'm gutted :( i'd saved up for ages for 4 days at my local hunt - then horse got a cut - *just* got her back into enough fitness to go and snow kicked in - not been able to ride now for 3 weeks - the tracks round here have literally just thawed enough to get her out of her field - and low an dbehold the snow is due again :( so i'll prob not be able to get her fitness back up enough to make it out this year :(
may go on foot though if the get out :)
