Asking for a friend ? had a serious accident in August got kicked in the knee which broke into 3 peices plus went thru veins and ligaments. Poor thing had to have 2 blood transfusions and was in hospital for 2 weeks . She was hoping to start riding very gently but tried to get on and have a little ride yesterday but apparently hopeless very painful and insecure. So has anyone had a badly broken patella and got back riding and what was the time frame ? I want to give her some hope as she is so down about this awful injury .

Your poor friend, that sounds like an awful injury and one that I would expect to take a good while to heal. What have her doctors said about returning to activity and returning to riding?

Maybe there is a physio who uses a mechanical horse / simulator to build up gradually nearby? Horrible sounding injury, time and patience and a good sports physio can do wonders on the path to recovery.

Thankyou to everyone for the good wishes unfortunately she is like most of us equestrians with wanting to get going the consultant has said probably about a year of recovery so another 6 months really . The trouble is she has a new young cob and is in the mature can be nervous lady rider bracket lol so having a long break from riding is not ideal for her confidence but anyway recovery has to come first .

well I didn't break my patella (ouch btw horrible) but I did manager to fall off (a very small step ladder ?) and break my tuba plateau and rip completely or partially everything else in my knee a year ago last month

Many many hours of physio later and its just about right but even now has wobbly moments and can be very painful here and there

So LOTS of physio. If she hasn't been referred to a physio yet she needs to be. and to doo all the exercises they suggest.

She has to re establish the connection between her ligaments/muscles to the bones so she's looking at at least year.

I'm only just thinking of getting back in the saddle.. it wouldn't have been safe ups until now.

Send her my best wishes. its a b****r of an injury that onkt time and physio will help.

Ah, I have to say that timeline doesn't surprise me from the injury you described.

In the nicest possible way, getting on a horse 6 months into a year long recovery is really not very clever. On here we all understand wanting (and feeling the need) to get on sooner, whether that's due to our own itchy feet or the (most often misguided) notion that it's what the horse needs. However your friend has a really serious injury and rushing back into riding will undoubtedly only give her long term issues. That will have a far bigger impact on her cob & her confidence than waiting 6 months to properly heal. I know that this can be an awkward situation as a friend, but please do all you can to encourage her to stay on the ground until her doctors have signed her off to ride.
