have any of you done it ?? I done mine last saturday (not the one just gone) am only just starting to walk properly and stairs are still a problem. Still having to rest it, can't walk or stand tons.

How long was it before you started riding again ?? m soo annoyed with it, can't even stand riding boots over it let alone ride.

Am peed off and just want to ride. I know it is perfect chance to do ground work, but I want to ride. Hate not having the choice.

Poor you. A sprained ankle is so painful. You need to be careful as it improves - cause can very easily go again until it strengthens. I found applying witch hazel really good. soak cotton wool in witch hazel - then cover with cling film to keep moisture in - and then bandage.

As it improve try using one of those exercise wobble boards that you stand on with a dome underneath. It will really help with strength and stability. Depending on how badly it all tore ligaments and nerves may have been damaged and you will need to re route the nerve impulses if that is the case. I really wrecked mine 3 years ago and I still have to look where I put my feet as I cant feel the terrain very well.

Long rides hurt too. Invest in some proper sprenger irons.

Ouch! The last time i sprained my ankle it took about 3 weeks before I was fully operational again. I find those tubigrip ankle supports great. I'm quite clumsy so we have a whole selection because i've done both ankle twice, my left knee god knows how many time (never my right thou) currently having trouble with my left hand (got hospital appointment on 14th Marc so hopefully they be able to do something about it)

I hate to be the bringer of bad news, but it depends on the degree of sprain (there are 3 levels). I did mine on Christmas Eve and healing is very slow. When after a few days it was still hugely swollen, very badly bruised and very painful, I saw the doctor, was sent for Xrays and put in plaster for 3 weeks. when the plaster was off, it was still very painful and is still healing only slowly

I'm still not back in the saddle, where the ligaments are ruptured, it can take months!

Good luck and be careful

I tore ligaments in my ankle the first week in September last year. Still hurts and is still swollen now.

Was about 6 weeks before I could walk anywhere near normal and even now it hurts to run (not as in sprint...but if I need to catch a calf/chickens etc).

Hurts in rising trot like stink! Long hacks make the outside of my ankle ache awfully too. Using my exercise machines is a necessity as I'm dieting. Used to do 10 miles a day on an elliptical walker. Now, after 2 miles it feels like it's on fire! Stepper is better as I don't have to "roll" my foot over the ball of my foot. I still have limited flexion and couldn't point down down to lie flat on tummy in bed (foot hangs off end of bed) or put wellingtons on. Driving long distances hurts too.

I've resigned myself to the fact that it's never going to be A1 again. However, I rode at hack pretty much straight away. Was comical watching me hobble up a high mounting block to get on (can't flex foot to get on from the ground) but I managed it and hacked. Foot was strapped up tight with vet wrap and gamgee down either side of the ankle to support the torn ligaments. strapped tight into a L shape and wore boots with zips. Bizarre, but it worked and infact I do think it helped to relax everything a bit. If I didn't ride for a week it hurt like hell again next time I got on.

Good luck with it.....long process I'm afraid. The ball thing is good too. Helps you to strengthen it up and reduce the incidence of re-straining when the weak ankle constantly turns over.

Oh your poor thing. I keep doing this. Ive got week ankles. You will have now!! If its that bad go to your doctors and they can treat it for you to aid proper repair. If it doesnt mend properly it will go again and be really painful. Basicly your musles have torn and need to repair. You are looking at a month till your able to walk normal. Sorry know what all that feels like.... ooch

I badly sprained my ankle and broke bone in foot, was about 6 weeks before I rode, the main problem was finding the right footwear. Was also told to use it. Good luck...

I did mine badly when bucked off over a year ago & it still isn't full strength & aches at times. When, months later, I finally went down the doctor's he got me a course of physio that really helped & finally meant I could walk on it without vetwrap & tightly laced boots (tip - doctor's think you're slightly mad if you wrap your ankle in purple vetwrap, though it did make him smile & he's known for being a miserable old git!).

If it's bad & you can afford it get some physio. The lady I saw said she could have done a lot more if she'd seen me sooner. It seems I'd done a lot more damage than I thought, rather than a simple sprain I'd pulled tendons & ligaments then not given them time to heal properly but compared to the other bruises & cracked knuckles it hadn't seemed that bad at the time
