Badminton - dogs

To all those who insist on staying comfortable in their own little world of "Oh my dog is SO well trained he comes back to me immediately whenever I call that is why he does not need to be on a lead". Well I hope at least one of you who posted that on other threads owned the lap warmer who chased Mary King yesterday - so how good was your recall then eh???

It happens every year and so far thankfully a major tragendy has been avoided but will the next rider / horse fatality at an equine event be due to a loose dog?

It is not hard to get a lead on a dog with a collar they cannot get out of, or a harness they cannot wriggle out of.

Thanks alot to the idiots who continue to give dog owners a bad name. It takes us closer to the time that we will no longer be welcome anywhere with our dogs.
 
I suspect that terrier slipped its collar (which is no excuse though), rather than was allowed to run loose. The 2nd one (which was dragging an extenable lead behind it), demostrated everything I hate about extenables and why I would never use one, they are just too easy to be jerked out of your hand.

You are right though as usual it will be the few irresponsible/incompitent owner who will ruin it for all.
 
It may well have been on a collar to start with but then I have seen plenty of dogs at Badminton and other equine venues loose from the start - often no collar anyway.

Actually I need to look back at the recording of Mary's round with the lap wamer in hot pursuit as I thought (though I am probably wrong) it had a red collar on it.

I have not watched all the coverage yet - when was the one with the flexi lead still attached?
 
I agree BUT and its a big but, what if it really was just an accident ie, not born of any kind of negligence?

What if their child was about to be mown down by some of the various vehicles in the grounds or..well..whatever.

I always try and see a valid reason because I just hate to think some people are so senseless to let it happen out of negilgence!
 
Last year at chatsworth a dog chased a horse round the whole course, ended up gettin kicked, i dont think a horse trails is a place for dogs, i dont care what ayone else thinks! keep them safe at home! dont put anyone else lifes at risk!
 
All tragedies are "accidents" however some are COMPLETELY preventable - i.e. just keep your darn dog on a lead in public.

Time and time again at Badminton particularly there are "cute" media shots of dogs in the lake, playing, running in the parkland OFF A LEAD!!! When will people learn - never and then one day a horse on course will be distracted by fluffy chasing it yapping at it's heels and come down at a fence - horse and / or rider fatality. Oh it was just an "accident".

Loads has been said about rider ability (or lack off) in the wake of the recent rounds of eventing tragedies. Maybe MP will care to make a comment about accidents waiting to happen with loose dogs?

And yes people ARE COMPLETELY SENSELESS when it comes to their dogs half the time.

If i remember correctly it was chasing a grey horse with male rider on board wearing white... it was near the tricky hegde corner......

Edited to say, it was Vettori and Stuart Tinney so quite close to the end.
 
We were there at huntsmans close when that dog went. I always make sure I tighten my dogs collars in places like Badminton so that they can't slip their collars. She didn't exactly act quickly, she was screaming though.

My dogs were fab all day but I cannot believe some dogs, Nero got bitten by a border terrier, A staffy went to go for Shala (both on loose leads when mine were on tighter leads), a lab, whippet, several JRT's growled at my dogs and the owners just smiled and laughed. A JRT bit a womans ankle when we were walking around the tradestands and we saw numerous dogs fight and growling at each other.

As a dog owner I find myself wondering when will Badminton ban dogs as the Royal Welsh have...it may be for the best even though its sad as mine really enjoyed themselves...

Yes, how many flexi-leads did I see - yet they were banned.
 
On a slightly different note can I just say how lovely it was to see so many beautifully behaved dogs, relaxing on a day out with their owners!!!!

Shame there were 2 naughty ones, even more of a shame they were both terriers (just glad they weren't JRTs).

Really? Didn't know they were banned - The owners using then should have been asked to leave.

I agree PBS, we met some lovely doggies and everyone was so nice, our pups met staffys, rotties, labs etc etc etc and they just loved it.

Did anyone see that lovely chap with a big black lab and an ernormous white dog - put me in mind of Tia's dog, they were so lovely!!
 


I hate to see badly behaved dogs. On the other hand, a well behaved dog is a pleasure. I think it would be a terrible shame for dogs to be banned from events but unfortunately, it may be the only way to make people listen

Yep, flexi leads were banned and owners were asked to bring bags to clear up poop, which we did, other didn't because I saw and smelt crap around the course

One of the reasons I don't go to events like these is because of other people's dogs. My dog suffers from selective hearing so I always keep his harness on. He walks brilliantly on the leads and ignores other people and dogs unless I tell him he can say hello but everytime we have gone somewhere like Badders he has been attacked

Exactly - i have taken my dogs in the past and will do again BUT it is morons like the owners of the (at least 2) lap warmers that did get loose and chase two competitors that will in the end spoil it for all of us RESPONSIBLE dog owners.
 
I took 2 of our patterdales, and I've always taken my dogs to badminton and I consider myself a responsible owner, i pick up all my mutts poos etc...

But this year the pup managed to hunch her back, roll her shoulders and back out of her harness fortunately in the tradestands area....so it can happen even if you think you are fully prepared!!

Needless to say I made sure I tightened it right up and attached my split lead to her collar and her harness so there was no getting away from me, I also made a point of holding onto the dogs by their harnesses whenever we were near a fence and a horse was going through.

Unfortunately a lot of people just seem to think its their right to let their dogs roam around off the lead or just don't even care enough to pick up poo, it spoils it for all the rest of us.
Its really annoying when you see the riders doing this with their dogs.... it seems that they think they are exempt from the rules too!!!
