just observing that even in the heat of competion both close to home that both andrew nicholson and matt wright didnt keep going and noticed their horses werent right tho neither was on three legs. i think i expressed this sentiment about the same riders after rolex last year and fair play to both of them. hope certain other people noticed.

and Julie Tew.....she is a good las for putting her horses welfare before the competition. Quite a few quit whilst they were ahead and are great ambassadors for the sport for doing so.
Did anyone else notice that 24yr old french dude in the blue whom they said was edging on "dangerous riding" because he was riding too fast into fences and horse fell (but got back up). Think he should get a yellow card!

Glenbuck was absolutely pooped, and should have been pulled up

Didn't see OT go.

Agree with you VictoriaEDT! I think that french rider was a disgrace - he didn't seem to know how to ride any of the fences properly. And also agree that Zara and Oli should have pulled up - their horses were shattered.

Lucy Weig (cant spell the rest) was commentating OT and she was cringing towards that latter stages of the course....she sounded disaproving of him carrying on (but did it diplomatically of course!)

Never been a huge MW fan but the way he rode today was looking much classier and he certainly went up in my estimation with the way he handled what was obviously a very tired horse.

The speed in which Mr Nicholson reacted to his horse going lame was excellent, shame more riders are not as astute!

Agree Zara and Oli T should have pulled up.... well done to those three riders who retired there horses immediately as they were not right. I also was highly impressed with andrew last year at Burghley he was SO QUICK to get straight off his horse wehn his leg got a bit stuck many would have waited for them to get out of the situation themsleves and avoid 65 pens.

Glenbuck was out on his feet and she is very lucky not to have put him on the floor...........What was that cr@p about ''nursing him home''.......if it had been anyone else, there would have been far more fuss.
The apalling French rider is horribly typical of a fair proportion of the lesser riders here in France......lovely horse tho'.....

All credit is due to the young riders that rode to their abilities, and took the longer routes when necessary, and got their horses safely and comfortably home.

Didn't Caroline Powell give that young horse a peachy ride?

Yes well done to both of them.
I did feel some of the horses appeared to be not as fit as they could be, and a couple of riders perhaps should have retired rather than struggle round the last 1/4 of the course.
I heard MP say that if they weren't that fit they would be better afterwards for it, and I do realise what he means, that being tested like that would make them fitter in future, but my own feelings are that you shouldn't be using Badminton to fitten your XC horse...
I think many more riders now make use of gallops, and that sounds a vital part of the preparation.
It was interesting to see how that fence that Dee Kennedy fell at rode for others, some made it look absolutely nothing, and others almost fell off.
All in all a brilliant day's tv for me, it's a rare thing for me to sit for literally hours watching anything, I fidget too much, but the whole thing had me glued to my chair!

Hmmm, you think? Funny how things can be perceived differently. I was stood right there by the fence watching it and I felt the very reason the horse got into that situation was because he rode at that fence (and the one previously) too fast and recklessly.

In fact, just the way he steamed into the ring (that occurred at the second of the three fences in the ring near the end of the course right?!) Well, from the moment I saw him ride into the ring I thought he was being fast and reckless and was rather taken aback. I was not surprised a few seconds later when the horse ended up caught up like that...

actually I know what you mean after looking back on a video of it he didn't ride well into it but I did think he was quick to get off.

With OT it doesnt surprise me to see him puch an exhausted horse for home as he is always like this (pushing flint to his fastest possible all the time) but with Zara...well I am gutted actually and surprised she carried on.

Yes, I totally agree. His reaction was positive, but the way he rode into the fence was not respectable - hence I have very mixed emotions about him as a horseman, but I was glad when WFP beat him the following day and it all came down to that final tricky fence - I don't think Jilly Cooper could have made a better dramatic ending than that

Didnt see anything wrong with Zara carrying on. Yes the horse was tired, but so were many others. She rode him home well. WFP commented this run was the first time Ballincoola has ever finished with no petrol left in the tank. It was a tough course. The horse finished clear and she wasnt using her whip to "encourage" it to continue like an other rider that could be mentioned

The horse is very fit, and I imagine will come out nice and fresh tomo.

P.s Jilly Cooper is writting a new book (this time about racing-could be dramatic lol)

You would have thought after Burghley last year OT would have wanted to pull up after falling off both.

Horse was obviously absolutely shattered well out. I have only just started watching the footage from today and I had to replay the latter end of her round to make sure my eyes were not deceiving me. It was pretty sad to watch particularly given her status worldwide as a role model, and MP's comments in H&H re: riding.

If that had been any other rider there would have been plently of criticism from the commentary team, instead they commended her for "nursing the horse round". And had she fallen through the animal being so tired would there then have been an outcry about flogging a tired horse - of course not.

The commentary were quick to run down others later on for carrying on with tired horses.

i agree with that. i love that horse.. he's my new king william!

There's nothing wrong with nursing a tired horse home. Pushing it and pushing it till it's practically on its knees aint so impressive.

Little Lemon finished exhausted, everything else was tired but nothing else looked on its knees. Matt w def did the right thing, doubt he would have if he'd not had a stop though.

Yep, we said at the time that he seemed to be more concerned with getting the time then with getting home safely. To be fair, he did get off very quickly but he didn't really have much choice!

Back to Badminton, I agree about Zara - we were stood near the end of the course and that horse looked very tired.

I didn't see Zara & Glenbuck until today , but was horrified . Poor horse looked absolutely cooked - she should have been stopped imo .

Not only was Little Lemon exhausted but even the commentator was telling Andreas Dibowski to get off it's back (not literally........but to get his fat arse out the saddle!!), as he rode it from the 2nd last.

The problem this year has been that so many events have been cancelled and on a 4* level you need the runs to get the horses fit and Zara would not continue the course if she knew that the horse have had enough i know that much,i am an owner of an Event horse mysef who is on a 2* level qualifying for a 3* BUT with the events getting cancelled its an impossible task. Most of these riders are professional riders riding other peoples horses and would not risk a future ride on a good horse by making a bad judgement.I know the mentality of most riders and owners and its easy for people to sit and judge a rider on TV and the only one that we got to listen to is a commentator who has most likely never ridden himself.....Sorry but it really gets up my nose when riders gets criticized when they are the ones in the saddle and the one that feels the horse, not us watching

It is right that the horse did appear fit and well on the Sunday. However, she did use her whip. We were in the main arena as she came in and she had to use the whip to help Glenbuck over the last fence.
