My mare during the summer came up loads of lumps. The vet thought it an allergic reaction to insect bites. The strange thing was that they were only on one side. The vet gave me some tablets but they did not work. She is a very itchy mare and suffers bad with insect bites in the Summer.

A couple of these lumps were under the saddle and they have just gone hard like cysts. They do not bother her and she is not sensitive to them but a few more have appeared recently. Its almost as if she is allergic to her own sweat?

Her skin is terrible and she is very scurfy. But her coat is lovely and shiny. She was my rain scald baby. The thing that is totally baffling me and the vet is the fact that the lumps are only on one side? They are like bites as they have heads on. There are no lice or creepy crawlies in her coat.

my mare is similar vet didn't know so just have to hope the go and my mare has good skin but is chestnut and very fly sensitive.

my old and my new gelding have them. Nothing to worry about but if you want to get rid of them vet can inject them and the go within about 3 weeks. I used to get my old horses done every year when he had his jabs. Will do the same with new horse when he has his jabs in March

I had something similar and they were under the saddle but didn't ever cause a problem. I have no idea where they came from and they seem to have disappeared, but I did find that my horse had a slight food intolerance to garlic ( I initially thought it was either the alfalafa in alpha a oil or the soya oil) which made her very itchy. Since taking her off the garlic she hasn't been as itchy and the lumps seem to have gone.

Weird! Sherlock Holmes hat on - is there anything that she fairly regularly does that involves only one side of her? Eg does she stand pressed against a hedge in wind and rain? Does she lean against a particular wall of her stable? If she stands huddled in a group of horses does she prefer to stand on one particular side more often? Even if she's rugged, it could be causing something on one side that doesn't happen on t'other (so much) if you see what I mean. It could make her sweatier or something like that if she has dodgy skin anyway. Don't know if you're doing this anyway but a supplement that promotes healthy hooves eg Farriers Formula, will also promote a healthy skin/coat x

The only thing I can think of is that she does like to lay down. She might lay on that side and get hot. Back lady today thinks they are blocked sweat glands so it would make sense being hot under the saddle and the side she lays on.

She's such a sensitive soul and during the Summer I have to have her in a Boett otherwise she would have to live in 24/7. I cover any exposed soft bits by her belly button with sudocream so the flies don't bite her! Have tried all the global herbs supps for itchy horses they help but not much.
