My mare is due on 17th May and over the last two weeks I've noticed small changes in her udder area, nothing major though.

The last three days or so one side seems larger than the other in the morning, it's firm to touch but doesn't seem painful but it goes down once she's been turned out for the day.

Is this normal or should I be worried? It is definitely worse on one side, again is this something I should get my vet to check. She is very well and relaxed in herself etc.

I realise I sound totally paranoid (!) but I can't find anything helpful regarding this on the net or in my books - Help!

Firstly, generally each side will differ in size - some more than others, (just as in humans).

Secondly, as she is walking it off there should be nothing to concern yourself over, esp. if it is only body temp to touch? If it gets hot, then it could be mastitis brewing, which can happen in mares yet to foal, even maidens. But from what you describe, that doesn't sound likely, though obviously I cannont tell from this side of the screen.

Nothing to worry about, all perfectly normal, the hardening and softening routine is a regular occurrence as is the unevenness, some mares fill up equally, some don't, my seventeen year old mare has always been uneven in size and has nursed so healthy foals to-date.. 17th of May, good you can keep me company whilst I'm on watch

My Paint is due 17th too, but it will come when it comes.

She is bagging up (and down) just as you describe, although she is dripping milk a bit as well tonight.

Phew, thanks for the replies, you have put my mind at rest and I'll keep an eye on it.

It's these kinds of things you only learn through doing it I guess, and as a first timer I have loads to learn still!

Yep 17th May seems v close now, although she has been late with both her past foals...I hope she doesn't keep me up for too long!

Thanks again
