The latest in Bailey and his poorly eye; the vet came out on Tuesday and decided, as did the specialist who was with her, that the best course of action for Bailey would be to have the ulcer gridded as it is a non healing one and wouldn't do anything otherwise. We hadn't discussed this being done on this visit, and I was taken by suprise but I trust my vet. This was done, and thankfully, went well. I was quite stressed about it (due to a few things I have been getting more stressed anytime anything has to be done to Bailey) but knew it was for the best.
Christmas Eve however, was a whole different kettle of fish. I got to the yard to get everything sorted in prep for Christmas Day. Bailey was being a bit of an idiot in his stable - his boyfriend Sid had gone out into the field and he was the only one in. I got him out of his stable, and remembered my wheelbarrow was on the yard in preparation for mucking out. I led him wide around it in order that there was enough room for he and I (there wasn't anywhere to tie up at this point). I don't really recall what happened next, it all happened so fast, but from what I remember, Bailey looked at something and was a bit silly and somehow managed to back himself up nearly all the way across the yard and the next minute there was the most horrendous noise as he got tangled in the barrow. I calmed him down and then next thing I know, there is blood spurting from his leg. This was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Everything got on top of me from the last couple of months and that was it.
Luckily for Bailey and I, my friend (who is also a small animal vet) was there and came to our rescue. She gave me my marching orders for tea and sugar to help with the shock and took charge of Bailey. She bandaged him up and we called my vet, who was there within ten mins. Bailey has cut himself in three places, a couple of superficial cuts across his right buttock, but the worst, and the cause of all the bleeding was a 2.5 inch long and quite deep cut in a serpentine shape which nicked the main vein above his gaskin on the inside of the right hind. There was just blood everywhere, and it was flowing. It looked horrendous as he is dun and has a white sock on that leg and his whole leg was just soaked and bright red. The yard was just covered in blood.
My brilliant vet came out and sorted us (yes me as well!) out. He has about 20 staples for the main wound and has been bandaged from the top of his leg to his hoof (I think it is a robert jones bandage?) and she did about 4 layers on him to make sure he couldn't move his leg and start the bleeding again.
He should be fine thankfully, and can have the staples out in ten days. I am just utterly exhausted from it all. I don't know about Bailey perhaps needing the horsepital, I think if he does anything else I bl**dy well will need it!
Hot Toddies for getting this far
