Hi

I am after some opinions on the above feeds. Toffee is currently on Lo Cal and is looking well, however it's getting harder and harder to get hold of locally, the latest from my usual place (quite a large one who supply other smaller feed stores in the area) are saying they can't give a date of when it will be delivered.
I began to look for an alternative and came across the Winergy Low Energy (Feed store keep this in stock all the time....) I phoned Winergy/Spillers and for Toffee they said one heaped scoop a day/1kg would suit her age/type/work load. At £11 for 15kg, this wouldn't last as long as the Lo Cal which is £22 but lasts at least 3 months, however she has chaff with this but not enough to make a huge price difference.
What I am wondering, is it worth the extra cost? I do like the sound of it, and it's lower protein/starch etc than the Lo Cal which really appeals.
Any thoughts?
 
Are you just feeding the Lo Cal for vit/mins? If so, why not just swap to a broad spectrum vit/min supplement such as Equivite Original or Benevit in a handful of chaff?

When assessing starch and protein levels, do remember that you have to factor in the amount of the feedstuff that is fed per day. For example, let's say that Brand A is a concentrated balancer designed to be fed at 500g a day and is 20% starch and Brand B is a fibre feed designed to be fed at 1kg a day and is 10% starch. Both brands will actually be supplying the same amount of starch per day!

I can't remember how/why she started on Lo Cal but she looks very well on it and has just the right amount of energy so have kept her on it but it's a good point about the supplements.
The Feedstore have just phoned to say they can get some from another store for Saturday but will look into the supplement route.
 
Lo Cal is a balancer, the Winergy one is a concentrate feed that provides energy. They are therefore not comparable unless you feed the recommended amount of the Winergy to provide your horse with all the vits and mins he needs. I agree with TGM, I would get a GP supplement to put in the chaff. Lo Cal is about the least expensive pelleted balancer so unless you can afford to switch to TopSpec Lite or similar (TopSpec Lite is probably the most comparable TS product to Lo Cal), go for a powdered supplement. Having said that, I pay £25/bag for TS Lite and I think Lo Cal is about the same now..?

If what you are feeding works it would be better not to change it. Ring Baileys and ask if there is a supply problem and tell them youre finding it hard to get hold of. They may be able to help you
