Evening :)

I posted yesterday about my horse who has suddenly pulling shoes frequently. After putting this down to a change in feed (change over to a competition mix from a balancer and 'just grass') I am considering trying my horse on Baileys Outshine sue to the high oil, low sugar content. (needs the energy but not the starch/sugar!)

Im keen to support muscle tone as my horse is in her late teens, and wonder if there is something I can supplement this feed with to do so/or if I need to at all?

Sorry, feeding is such a mindfield!!

Yes you will need to supplement it in terms of vits/mins as it's not a fully balanced feed, just an oil supplement - can you go back to your balancer alongside this.

I love it, been feeding it for years but I only feed 2 mugs a day for my TB (500g). It's brilliant for coat shine and muscle tone but it is only a supplemental feed and not a balanced ration. In terms of energy it's slow release so it won't give you the same effect as the competition mix. I would say at 500g daily it doesn't effect mine's energy level at all, just gives her calories to help with her weight and help with muscle tone.

I add it to a full ration of hard feed or a balancer/chaff depending on time of year.

Yes you need supplement it with vits/mins - Outshine is basically just an oil supplement. You will probably find it wont do much for energy levels though. If you need energy but not sugar maybe you should consider something like Power and Performance. You should still be feeding a balancer or fully balanced vit/min supplement though - if your horse has started losing shoes since stopping the balancer, this is probably why.

I do love outshine, but I never use it now... if your horse is pulling shoes and you are primarily trying to maintain a high oil - low sugar diet with added ooomph, then in your shoes I would probably do the following:

go back to the balancer and just grass, add 1-2 cups of linseed meal for oil, and consider oats for ooomph (if needed). subsitute this with decent hay/haylage.
