Have looked at the Baileys website, but it doesn't say much about it....

Is it suitable as a sort of 'bulker upper' for my horse, who is getting fitter for some hunting, but isn't quite there yet? It is what YO reccomended, but just want your opinion too. She is just having a 1/4 scoop twice a day, as I take it's quite concentrated....

any extra info/stories about it welcome!!!

ETA - Sorry, have just clicked on the product - there IS a lot about it....

do you like Baileys in general, having tried other feed brands...if so/not, why/why not?

I love Baileys! I've always found their feeds clean and well made which seem to do as it says on the bag! I've used their Economy Mix as a base for my feeds ever since they brought it out then added to it with something like stud cubes/mix/ Topline/S beet.
Have to admit I haven't used the Outshine though but have heard good things about it although it is expensive and you'd probably get the same effect from something like Linseed oil. I don't know enough about it or your horse to know if it's what your horse needs but if I wanted to bulk up a feed I would be thinking of something like sugar beet, barley rings/micronised barley/ Alfa A Oil (that's brilliant btw!).
I'm sure you'll get good advice from on here anyway.

I'll second the vote for Alfa Oil which I'm using on Lukey at the moment. A few weeks ago his coat was looking rather lacklustre but now he has a lovely shine, AND he's put on the condition he needed, all whilst maintaining his lovely temperament.

I also like the Baileys feeds, and contacted them recently about Lukey and they suggested Outshine for him although I've yet to try it as he's looking good on the Alfa Oil with balancer and a basic mix

QR -

The yard pays for my feed as part of the full livery package, so I'm very lucky there - no need to worry about cost in that dept! She's never been on much, so I don't know what she'd be like either on something a bit more exciting - but we'll have to wait and see!

So Alfa - A oil is very simliar to the outshine, I take, as they both are sort of oily based....I'm worried that she'll put on weight, rather than continue to lose a little!!

I will give them a ring when I can, to see what they think, too.

Thanks for the replies!

Given that your feed bill is included in your livery then try the Outshine. Baileys recommended I use a very small amount as my boy is a rising 2yr old new forest(talking 1/2 cup a day), so although the initial outlay would be rather costly it would work out fairly economical to use, it just happened that the feed merchants had alfa oil in stock.

I wouldn't say that alfa oil is similar to outshine as it's basically an alfalfa based oily chaff as opposed to the Outshine which is a concentrated feed.

Give Baileys a ring and see what they say. They do know their stuff

i feed zak the spearmint outshine, and it really does make him shine!!It hasnt put that much weight on but has done something, mind you he is only on two cups a day-i would have imagined half a scoop a day would do much more!!I love baileys feeds-they have to be my favorite

I use outshine on my TB gelding who has in the past dropped weight over winter. It is really a concentrated calorie feed so you feed the extra calories but without the bulk of say feeding a whole extra scoop of something. I use baileys no 4 all year round and add outshine over the winter. It worked last year so hopefully it will work the same this year

thanks everyone for the replies - it sounds great, will go ahead with the outshine and just see how we get on. Will also ring Baileys.....thanks x

used it for 2 years to help keep weight on thru hunting season. worked really well. was feeding up to 1kg a day.

have now switched to full fat soya meal as is half the price for the same sort of energy level. still oil based too so no sillyness.

They've recommended it to me instead of their economy mix as my mare is getting a lo cal chaff, speedi beet and their stud balancer (in foal) but they said to get outshine instead of mix... given that she's prone to weight gain I'm a bit in too minds as to whether to get it or not, its v expensive really for the amount you get...

Hmmmmm.

Still mulling it over!

you can actually feed slightly less, as its higher in oil. i feed about 800g per day to mine. he gets thin very quick in the winter, and he's hunting twice a week, RC once a fortnight and hacking/schooliing most other days.

Don't mean to put a damper on things, but I fed Outshine to my Connie TB x and it sent him completely bonkers!!! Mind you he was a bit of a nutter at the best of times...
