Baileys feedline are really helpful, might be worth giving them a ring? I have got my mare on LoCal Balancer which has all the bits in she needs and doesnt fizz her up.
I have him on Bailey's no 4 the top line conditioning cubes (1/2 scoop am and 1/2 scoop pm)at the moment, was wondering if Bailey's Outshine was worth getting too?
I agree with the above post re consulting the helpline as its quite pricey and you may not need it in addition to Top Line cubes. Having said that a friend has put her horse on it and he looks great. He was a bit of a fussy feeder too but clears the outshine up eagerly.
Personally I'd just feed more conditioning cubes (depending on the size of your horse). My TB used to have upwards of a scoop in each feed and this worked fine on it's own. It's always a good idea to talk to the feed companies though.
Unless your horse is about 13.2hh, you're seriously not feeding enough Conditioning Cubes! Talk to the feed company and see how much they suggest before adding Outshine!
The conditioning cubes should be fine gining into the winter months. The ourshine is realy best used in early spring time we have found that it helps the condition and makes the coat a superb shine which is great for showing etc.
I have been looking at the energy value of this feed and Baileys NO 4 recently as we had a skinny TB .The No 4 provides about 13.5 mj/kg ( digestible energy) compared with normal pony nuts at about 9mj/kg .And outshine provides 24mj/kg ,so if you are really looking for condition then outshine definately offers this and as this energy comes mainly from oil its a great alternative for fizzy TB,s .we have been feeding the outshine now for quite a while and have had great results .
Yes, obviously outshine is going to be higher in DE, as it is a conditioning supplement, but what is the point of adding this when you could get the same results but putting your horse on to the correct amount of hard feed? The latter would probably work out cheaper, rather than buying a £35+ bag of Outshine! Plus if the horse is not getting its recommended daily ration of hard feed, it will not be getting all the essential vits and mins!
My saddler recommended Outshine for my native pony with no topline but I rang the Bailey's helpline who said it might be a bit too much for him at present and to carry on with the diet I had just started him on and see how he faired (lo cal balancer and alfa a oil). So I don't think they would push you to use it if there was a better/cheaper way.
Give Baileys a call - very helpful.
Saddler uses Outshine on her young dressage horse it to keep condition on without fizz, she highly rates it.
I totally agree with Kittykatcat. You are underfeeding if this is a horse not a pony and will unbalance the ration further by adding Outshine without first increasing the No 4.
If he gets on well with the No 4 then just up them to the recommended amount, it will be much more cost-effective than feeding Outshine. To give you an idea, if you feed the No 4 then it will cost about 40p to gain 10 MJDE (horsey calories) while it will cost about 72p to gain the same amount of calories from Outshine! Outshine is great for horses that can't tolerate cereals, or who need a very concentrated form of calories, and a lot of people like it because they don't have the mess of dealing with straight oil - however, it is definitely not the most cost-effective conditioner on the market!
If it is coat shine you are after as well as condition, then just add a little oil to his feeds!
I use baileys No 4 and he gets a huge scoop in morning and night feeds. It gives you the recommended daily ration on the back of the bag soI would weigh the amount you currently give him and if necessary adjust accordingly.
My horse since going on No 4 has blossomed , I top dress this with Top spec balancer to give him all the necessary vits and biotin for feet, he does look well.
As a matter of interest was size and breed is your horse/pony?

[/ QUOTE ] I'm not sure why you would add a balancer if you are feeding the recommended amount of a supplemented feed like No 4 - surely you are doubling up on the vit/mins?
My youngchap was on baileys no 4 and outshine
, on full ration of baileys no 4 he was a bit on top of himself so I have cut out the no 4 , added full ration stud balancer and maintained the outshine and he looks the best he has ever looked.
I have even been stopped by total strangers out riding to tell me how well he looks.
Last year I really struggled to put weight on. I will re introduce baileys no 4 if and when he starts to loose weight and subsequently cut down the balancer, however he looks so good since he has been on the outshine I will be continuing this whatever.
Mine lives out year round on lo-cal and outshine (the one on the far right of my pictures). Fabulous stuff and his coat his really glossy. If it's for condition as in weight the up your No4 to the right amount. If it's for coat shine then at one mug a day a 20KG bag of outshine lasts about 3 months.
I think the general idea of outshine was so that you could add more calories to a feed but without the bulk of adding "another scoop" of feed.
I've used it for the last 2 winters on my TB on top of Baileys no.4 as he was prone to losing a bit of weight and condition through growth spurts. This year he is going into winter fat and I hopefully won't have to buy any. It did bulk him up a bit and gave him a super shiney coat though
