i know we have had loads of threads about bakers dog food on here but i wondered if you good knowledgable dog people of the doggy forum could indulge for with just one more...

i have a lovely friend who has been feeding Bakers in small amounts to her 5yr old white GSD bitch who has recently been complaining of itching.

I told her feeding Bakers was basically a 'no no' due to it being cereal based and i suggested she come on HHO dog forum to find out more but she isn't hugely internet literate so can people please list me your reasons why YOU wouldnt feed it and why Bakers is mostly advised against as a dog food and if her bitch's itching could possibly be related to it?

then i can print this thread off and show it to her.

thankyou lovely ladies (and gents!)

dont know about itching but my friend fed her doberman on it and he was very excitable and didnt seem to be able to calm down even after loads of excercise. she changed him to burns complete(dont know which one) and he was calmer within 2 weeks so we assumed it was the bakers being too rich for him so maybe its too rich for your friends dog and is coming out as itching rather than manic behaviour.

if you do a search on here there are lots of posts about bakers which you could show her....

Go to the Dog Food Analysis website & type in Bakers. That shows the ingredients & gives the food a rating.

I have copied the page, but don't know if a link will work. It's full of chemicals banned in human foods, including ones linked to skin irritations & gastric problems.

Very interesting, thank you for that link. Ive printed that off for her too.

i used to feed Bakers as i knew no better, it was only after joining this forum and hearing what others have had to say about it i changed.
why for the loved of god you really need colourants in dog food is beyond me. i really dont think dogs ruddy care if they have green nuggets that are supposed to look like peas and if people are swayed into buying a pet food by the colour it is then frankly how stupid can you get...

Because it is the canine equivalent of McDonalds and you would not feed a kid McDonalds every day.
It is only popular because of a huge advertising machine, pretty colours and the fact that you can pick it up with the groceries in the supermarket.

Oh they are swayed by it in their thousands, plus its cheap and cheerful and available at any convenience store you can drive too, because god forbid that you could walk the dog there!!

But then I suppose most companies would have you believe than in a few generations your dog is now incapable of eating protein, certain meats and bones, and is more a vegetarian!!!

When we got our rescued springer she was fed on Bakers and we took her to the vets for a check up and the vet said change the food because its very fattening, not the best for their digestive system and it makes them smell!! we didnt notice this until we changed her feed and the difference was amazing!!

Hope that convinced your friend! :D

My friend feeds her dogs Bakers, I took them away for 4 days on holiday to a friends cottage rental and forgot to take food with me so they used his food (Burns, brown label which ever one that is).
I noticed a difference in the obedience in the small male dog within a couple of days, when i got back she said that she had tried them on Burns but they wouldn't eat it and when they did eat it they were unwell, I didn't have this problem when they were on it for 4 days, they ate it no problem, weren't unwell and recall seemed to improve (last one could have been coincidence though).

I bet they would have eaten it had you fed it to them at their home or if she left it down until they were hungry. They are conditioned into having Bakers or "McD's" at home so will refuse to eat something healthier as a child would as they know their owner will give in and give them the Bakers shortly enough!
