In the midst of a boring Friday afternoon I started reading H&H Online and came across the article about Ulla Salzgeber using one of these to compete. It seems odd to me that this would be allowed, what would be the next step lower leg training straps? I'm not saying I think they are wrong as I don't have the experience to make judgements like that!

I think they are a fantastic idea. I would rather see someone using a balancing strap than being a messy rider.
They are also great to hang on to when your horse has a paddy.

Yeah especially if your horse is plaited and there is nothing else to hang onto!!! I could have done with one on a few occasions!

I speaks from much experience !!! - having got a 0 for a movement cos it was done as a rodeo instead!!

It was me that asked about that when Horse and Hound posted for tack question suggestions!!! I saw ullas demo at Your Horse Live, apparently she used the strap at the olympics, Ihaven't tried it yet but after seeing the horse and the rider - I'd be tempted, might control my 'jabby' hand!

We use them. The horses no longer need to wear breastplates, much neater.

I always had them on the kids ponies when they were little. More street cred that a neckstrap. No we use neckstraps too. Thatnks to WFP making them fashionable.

balance straps are invaluable on young horses they mean you can tuck your thumbs under them keep the leg on and stay attached to the saddle!Having produced a lot of young horses especially stallions i have found them much better than neck straps or breast plates, infact ive been bucked off landed on my feet still with the neck strap in hand! the other use of the neck strap is aiding the rider in keeping the hand still so that the rider learns that they must keep the hand still relative to the horse not relative to the rider most of the people that i teach are very familiar with it. as for it being anyhting like staps that keep the leg in place i dont think so. poor or unstable leg position needs to be corrected usually some work without stirrups will help!
