Hi, we had someone from Allen and Page at our yard recently. My TB mare (19yrs old and in moderate work) was found to be on their condition score 2 out of 5, although I find she is looking ok after the winter have seen worse and she is fairly fit. I have been feeding her on Baileys Lo Cal and Alfa A Oil plus lots of micronized linseed and some hi fibre cubes. A & P recommended to cha.nge to Calm and Condition as the complete feed with a small portion of Alfa A Oil added.
I am in two minds about this. A, she is a fussy eater and so if feeding a balancer I know she gets all the nutrients even in a small portion and the C&C needs to be fed in a rather large quantity. B once tried her on unmolassed sugar beet and she went loopy then, may have just been coincidence but ever since then I have stayed clear. She is spritely enough as is...
Friends at the yard swear by Blue Chip so wondering if I should try that instead of the A&P route...
Otherwise I really like feeding the Alfa A Oil and a balancer I just like the feeds, but in the summer I cannot get much of the Alfa into her so it is mainly grass and balancer and she could do with just a little more weight.
Confused now as to how to go forward. Stick with what I am doing or try new things? I realise that all feed companies will tell you to use their product to make the difference. There is no guarantee that C&C will really make much of a difference is there? The only thing that really has put weight on my girl in the past has been grass... which is not so great this spring in our field. and then my friends had good results with Blue chip. Worth following their advice?
Any ideas welcome
