Merlins winter rug (rambo duo) did a fair bit of mane thinning at the bottom third of merlins mane

Now I thought it should have grown back by now..... the top half certainly has got longer and thicker.... but its still really wispy and thin.

Is there really anything that will help it recover..... it is almost impossible to plait and when done the plaits are miniscule!!

Sure he's not rubbing it due to the midges? They seem to be in force this year.

I would say it's best to keep it pulled short so that it thickens a bit rather than letting it keep growing long and straggly?

You could rub cornucrescine in. It is a bit messy. Coconut oil is supposed to work too and smells nicer but I have used both and would say cornucrescine is better.

Pretty sure he isnt rubbing it...... infact am sure as there really isnt anywhere to rub it in the field and in the stable he just rubs his bum

Its not even a case of keeping it pulled short....... it just does not grow. I have pulled the top loads of times but the bottom third just stays the same....

Could the rug have damaged the follicles???

Not sure I could handle cornucrescine getting all over me when riding..... hoped that someone had tried the megatek (sp) stuff.

I have tried the megatek and it didn;t help my horses mane. In fact I am still hoping someone can come up with a great suggestion for mane growth caused from sweet itch

I just hogged Sparks which solved my rug rubbed mane issue!!!....................but then she does have a neck built like a brick [****] house!!!

What about feeding a biotin supplement? It is supposed to help hoof growth isnt it? or does it just strengthen the Hair? Maybe not! Merlin might end up with a Mohican!

I have the same problem so I'm paying lots of attention to this! I havn't been able to plait up at all this summer so have written out any showing classes for the near future. But has anyone got any tips for stopping it happening again next winter? Apart from not using a neck rug.....

What do you mean END UP with a mohican.... he already has one

What you can see is the solo combed part of his mane, the rest is over the other side...... but that is it for the bottom part!!!! Its all over....... period!!!

Hiya

Coming into the spring the bottom half of my horses mane came out by the handful. I'm 90% sure it was due to his neck rug. He was getting too hot. I've found that the combination of no neck rug, good diet and spraying with Megatek re-builder:

has made his mane grow about 6" in about 3 months which is good going

. It's a bit fuzzy but it's there.
