Hi guys,

Bit worried about my mare. I lunged her on Monday evening and noticed patches of lighter coloured hair (the colour of her summer coat) on her hip, the rest of her is very much still dark bay. Any how after i lunged her i felt it and she didn't mind me touching it, it had lines of what felt like scabs - I asumed she had been bitten by Maccy her field buddy as he does threaten to quite a lot. As it didn't bother her i left it and decided to keep an eye on it.

Took her rug of yesterday and :-o she has a bald patch the size of a tennis ball, completely bald on her hip, 2 other patches looking like they will turn out the same. Had the vet today for her vacc. anyway so asked her to look, she was stumped to. Took some samples to send away, could be ring worm of lice but she says she doubts it very much. Any ideas? She said not to rule out allapicha (or however you spell it)! Worried I will have a bald horse! Any ideas?

We also noticed some dry skin patches around her nose, and muzzle which could be linked but not sure.

She is isolated now till we know what it is, any help would be great I am very worried that my lovely girl will losse her beautiful coat!

Thanks lucy xx

are her hips quite prominent.? it could be as simple as the rug is rubbing her hips and the patches on her nose are unrelated..

She is a section D and is quite 'rounded' has some spare er hum! It is only rubbing on one side and it is the same rug from last year and no trouble last year, I have to say i thought of that! The vet even checked the rugs!

Is she moulting? My old mare went bald, particularly on hips and loins when she was moulting. The first year it really freaked me, but I call the vet (also her old owner) and he said she was fine. The skin underneath was always healthy and it didn't hurt. It was just like she lost some of her winter coat before her summer coat had grown. Summer coat grew and looked normal.
