Noticed a sort of bald patch on the appaloosa tonight. He has wacky skin anyway and when he came to us had scabby and flaky patches, but this is nothing like that.

This is one patch, maybe 7 or 8cm across and a few high, on his his neck. It looks like the hair has thinned away almost completely. It is not at all sore (no problem with me fiddling with it), no scabs and it was completely dry but hot to touch.

I will try and get a photo tomorrow but has anyone experienced anything similar?

Might he have scratched himself with a hind foot and rubbed off the hair and irritated the skin? My sweetitch pony does this she scratches like a dog!

Well I would love know as my boy has two like this on this neck today. Exactly as you've decribed!
I thought maybe one of field companions had bitten him...?

It's very mysterious! Everything I can think of would surely lead to it looking sore though, but I guess it could be bruised rather than there being obviously damage to the skin.

A neighbouring horse did escape yesterday and was galloping around out the back of ours which caused much hooning around so maybe he did something then. I'm mystified!

I had this recently, on my horse's forehead. It didn't shift for ages, eventually we got the vet to look at it and said we thought it might be fungal / bacterial. A couple of washes with anti fungal / antibacterial shampoo later and it cleared up in days. The hair has completely grown back now. No idea what it was but the shampoo did the trick!

Thanks for the heads up! I think we might have some anti fungal shampoo already actually. :)
