Is the bigger the ring the more severe the bit? Thanks for any thoughts

KatB - I always understood that to be the case - aren't the ones used in polo much bigger rings, so the action is more pronounced?

Yes (do you mean Cheltenham gag?). And nylon cheeks make it more severe than the leather ones as they run freer, but the nylon ones are safer (leather ones can snap). However, a gag is only as severe as the hands on the end of the reins!

Yep except cheltenham gags are fixed ring and baldings are loose ring... thank you though!

Is funny - I bought one on ebay - advertised as Cheltenham gag - but was clearly a balding gag in the pic. Which was good cos it was what I wanted...

Yes a balding gag has loose rings, and can have a larger ring (mine is 10cm diameter, but friend has a bigger one!!!). They are called polo balding bits as generally used on polo ponies, but have one for xc!!!!

However it only has ickle rings, and so still have no stoppage at all

Back to square one.... does everyone else use it with 2 reins?!
