Bandages,overreach boots,tendon boots and all the others....

Hi all,
well i was just looking for someone to explain to me the idea of all things in the title and any other horsey "bootys" you know off! i only ever had to put them on horses and yard were i work(only 15!) and my loan pony does not wear them so never bothered taking interest until now!...

All boots / bandages are used for protection and support whether it be, tendon, fetlock, brushing, over reach, knee, shin, travel etc. So if your horse brushes his front/back legs then you would put brushing bots on, if he tracks up alot and catches his front feet with his back the over reach, i like to use bandages and over reach when doing flat work, and to jump i use tendon and fetlock boots.

Different boots serve different purposes.

For example I SJ with tendon boots on the front, schooling with nothing and xc with boots all round.
I hack with all in one knee boots and brushing boots in front and brushing boots behind. I use the knee boots for protection on the roads and brushing boots because a friend's horse was attacked by a dog out hacking and the boot took the brunt of the damage with only a few scratches to the horses legs, they were very lucky!

A lot of time bandages are used because they look pretty

i use a variety of boots all the time on mine. minimum i ride with is tendon and over reach, even just for walking out hacking. better to be safer than sorry

my young one wears brushing boots all round aswell as over reach boots. (as said, better safe than sorry!!)

my oldie wears special brushing boots behind that come all under her fetlock as she brushes low down and just knee boots in front

when my young ones older and jumping il convert to tendon boots but for now when hes playing over fences brushing boots provide protection on the front of the leg for any accidental knocks.

When MJ was in work, and shod, he lived in his over reach boots as he had a habit of pulling his shoes and half his hoof off!
He also was never ridden without exercise bandages. You have to be very careful when bandaging, as they can do a lot of harm if put on too tight or with lumps etc. He wore these to warm up, support and protect his tendons.
In the stable he wore stable bandages to keep his arthritis at bay, by keeping his legs warm.
Obviously, travel boots are a must when boxing anywhere, as are knee, and possibly hock, boots when hacking on roads.
