i am considering attaching barbed wire to the top of a field gate.
the ponies do not go near the gate,it is to keep intruders out.

i think it is a good idea but OH sayes if any one hurt themselves,we would be in trouble.
(the gate is in a place where the public should not be)

any thoughts on this?thanks

I used to have it on mine, but they just climbed over the fence instead. I have to repair the fence every so often, thanks to the locals who think my field is the local dog toilet/kiddies playground.

I don't think this [barbed wire] will work either, to keep nice people out, put a pleasant notice up explaining you don't want your field used by dogs due to dirt/disease implications, suggest they go to the park and which is provided for public recreation and the grass is short.
You will deter a few and annoy the others.
Other than that put up "quarantine" notification,
"THIS FIELD HAS BEEN CONTAMINATED WITH HOSPITAL WASTE AND AUTHORITIES HAVE ADVISED IT BE CLOSED TO ALL TRAFFIC"
You can scavenge a few yards of Police Tape from any accident site.

That suggestion utterly revolts me. Why on earth would you disrupt the site of an accident? Good grief.

Electric fencing! Always funny to see people going down the footpath and just leaning over to try and stroke the lovely ponies who are not stupid enough to go bear it and ZAP! :p we do have warning signs so if they havent read them I have no sympathy!!

Not a recent accident, but as you travel around you will see cars have been in hedges and have been towed away, but the tape is left to contaminate the countryside, so you are cleaning the environment.
She can buy yellow/black tape from Jewsons

Ooh, that made me laugh :DThe image of Mrs D pitching up at a crime scene with sirens, flashing lights and emergency service bods all over the place. She leaps from her car with a pair of scissors and starts hacking away at the tape, yells, "nothing to see here!" and speeds off.
No offence Dee but I have seen bits flapping about after the site is cleared. Maybe that's what she meant;)

Oops, cross posted

I agree with Monty Forever and would go with the electric fence with warning signs, that way no danger of the ponies getting injured either.

it might not stop determined people but it will make it more difficult for them:) i don't know why you would need a sign as i've never seen a sign on any barb wire fencing warning people that it's spiky;)
personally i like hiding a crow scarer in the field, one of those going off keeps idiots out as they think they're being shot at:D:D

No you dont, but in this day and age you're better off covering your back than taking the risk.

CERTAIN TYPES will remove the electric fence, I don't see why you should be put to any more expense, but hope something works.
Can you get a Bird scarer which triggers when someone climbs over he gate.. .............OK wanders off, the bar is open....................

I have wrapped barb wire around the top of my gate (wooden) it is tight to the wood rather than coiled up prison style.

I have climbed the gate with the barb wire on occassion and my OH pointed out that anyone undesirable would probably just put a blanket or coat over it.

However it has deterred children etc

Agree electric tape may be better as less likely to do lasting damage to trespasser. More damage being more expensive for you if you did get sued.
