BARE BACK!!

thats all well and good when you have a beautiful horse with beautiful paces!! :) my choices are a 14hh 27 yr old opinionated mare that still has her mind set in hunt mode as its all shes really done! or my 3 yr old who is to be backed in spring? It does look so fun though, I would love a go!! any tips?

we are here to help those who cannot ride their horses bare back!! A horse who gives his back to you makes it much easier for sure but that is the answer to sitting trot ...and many more schooling issues..if you would like some help or a lesson just pm me...we are here to help you x

Not looked at the link but i do agree that riding bare back does wonders for your balance. As kids we used to go catch our ponies from the field, vault on and gallop back to the stables! I also did bareback jumping competitons (including jump offs!) on my 14.2hh years ago. I will ride my own horse bareback across the field now although i haven't actually schooled him bareback i must admit.

Very lovely photos :) I try and ride bareback as often as i can, have made it my new mission to try and school bareback once a week at least as i think it helps my balance and ability to feel what Lola is doing underneath me immensley. I didnt ride bareback much until i had Lola. Took ages to get a saddle fitter out to us and didnt want to use any old saddle to back her so did it bareback :D Thankfully she was the most straightforward horse i've ever had the pleasure of backing so the no saddle business didnt seem to make much of a difference to her. I think it helped actually, seems to have made her much more reactive to my weight and seat rather than relying on hand and leg, even with a saddle.

I love riding bareback, although my issue is getting on! After breaking my pelvis in my teens I no longer have a "spring" in my step and I'm not as agile as I once was, and my horse is 17.1hh and quite bouncy, and I don't mean bouncy paces, I mean feet off the floor bouncy! I do however grab any chance I can to ride one of the 14.2hh cobs at work bareback to the field and LOVE it!!! Wish I could do it more often. :(

Always did this as a kid. Now I'm older, don't think I have the balance. Does it hurt the horse's spine, I wonder? - and how do you stop the grey dust effect on the jods?

im jealous of the horse and your hair! more dressage riders need to have funny coloured hair :D i used to have pink hair until i got a series of funny looks from the judges... hm.

i would love to ride my horse bareback and i have done once or twice, but his paces are truly off the floor and he has *no* shoulders to sit behind - ill sit on cobs bareback all day though!!! :D

Ignore the Judges...be brave!!xx

BEAUTIFUL ! :D
I used to have a cob who I bought as a 2yo. I backed him and broke him to harness, and he was quite a "keen" ride and drive. I loved nothing better than hacking him bareback around the fields, his canter was extremely comfy.
I also used to school him bareback in just a headcollar :D.
Even in a headcollar, he would work in a nice outline and even had a little white "lipstick" around his lips .
Now, I'm thinking about backing my Welsh D bareback :D.

I backed my first horse bareback and loved it, hardly ever had a saddle on her. I used to hack my old mare out for hours bareback too. Now I have a freisian who is very comfy to sit on bareback - haven't schooled him tho as his trot is MAHOOOSIVE and I would just bounce off!!:D

OH and I ride Ron bareback regularly - mostly the day after hunting but also for some decent fast hacks in the summer and for some schooling.

this is me and Ron making use of an open schooling day at Northallerton EC

Brillian JenHunt!! and everyone else who still rides bare back!! At the Spanish Riding school you have to ride (albeit in a saddle) but no stirrups for at least 8 months...and those riders are excellent!!

I love riding bareback in the school or out hacking. I love feeling the warmth that comes up beneath him too, I'm sure the warmth helps you to stick! I've never ridden with a bareback pad because of the above.

If you have good balance (riding bareback helps you immensely with this) and don't jog about you won't hurt his back.
