Bare foot diet

High fibre, low sugar and starch (cereals), magnesium oxide if they are deficient, TBH good quality forage and a decent balancer such as the ones Forageplus do are the basics really.

Thank you both.

I have one horse that has never had shoes, he is fed Allen and Page Fast Fibre and Happy Hooves chaff type stuff :o
I got a new horse 2 days ago, he also doesn't wear shoes, but his feet don't look as good IMO.
The first horses diet has possibly been more luck than judgement and I'm always willing to try anything for an improvement :)

Is there a best diet for a barefoot horse?

Which supplements are worth using?

Our soil is low in selinium and iodine if that helps?
I would phone up pro earth [EBAY], and ask their advice, in order to provide a balanced mineral the pro hoof might be better than the pro balance which is a forage balancer for the average UK soil.
You can also think about getting a full analysis and a special mineral mix made up, but unless you have a lot of horses, this might well be overkill. See Rockley Farm
Ask your equine vet about the selenium deficiency in area.
my barefoot diet 475kg 15.00 mature horse in light work:
winter, split in to two feeds:
500gms [when dry] quick beet/ speedy beet
30gms balanced minerals
100gms micronised linseed meal [charnwood milling]
Hand full of non molassed chaff [Dengie], one per meal
Some salt
Summer: one third to half the above, but still 30gm minerals
