Hi
I started to feed Pro Hoof last May and saw a good improvement in my horse's feet , however, he was not in full work so was not getting alot of hard feed. Am about to finish the last bag and was about to order again , but am wondering if , now he is on full rations if I am overdoing the supplements ..
He is now in full work and we are working to improve top line . so , currently he is getting (split over several feeds obviously)

4kg D&H Staypower cubes
600g Build and Glow
200g Linseed
Kwikbeet
+ salt
+ Pro Hoof

He is currently out 24/7 on a large paddock with 24/7 access to good Haylage.

do not want to stop completely with a supplement , but not sure if I am going a bit overboard with the Pro Hoof when he is on full rations of 'complete' feed.....

would really appreciate anyones thoughts

The thing about Pro Hoof is that it is BALANCED for barefoot horses (well, any horse, but specifically made for good hooves).

Other feeds might not have the correct ratios and supplement levels.

However, I feed Pro Balance from the same firm, it is cheaper than Pro Hoof.

My horse is currently on a "LITE" chaff, Pro Balance, Linseed, Yeast Sac (which I added recently and I am sure has improved him) and mixed with a small amount of Fast Fibre. He isn't doing much work, and he isn't getting much feed, so if I increased his work a lot I would increase the linseed and even if necessary add some oats.

He is out on grass and his feet "ring" on the concrete and look great.

yep , I know it is specifically for barefoot, .. just a bit worried I am doubling up on a lot of stuff now he is on more hard feed which also contains vit/mins

I generally think the levels/quantity of hard feed fed is too minimal -even if advertised as complete- to be of any significance/cause any problems. It is all such a very rough science anyway as we are always guessing how much forage they are eating even if it has been tested.

I think you are right to be a bit concerned. Can you drop the ready-made feeds which have added vits and mins, stick to the Pro Hoof or Pro Balance and feed straights.

Generally people don't feed the suggested quatity of manufactured feed that they would need to get the recommended amount of vits and mins, but you are feeding 4kg which is quite a lot. 500 gm - well it depends on how concentrated it is. I know that if it was something like a balancer (Top Spec for instance) one mugful is supposed to supply all the maintenance vits and mins needed.

My trimmer would help you, she keeps a spreadsheet of all feeds on her tablet computer and can tell me straight away if a certain feed is a good thing or not, within the ration.

Pro hoof is

250 mg Vitamin B5
1000 mcg Vitamin B12
200 mg Vitamin B1

The only one I might worry about would be the copper. The vitamins will just be peed out. I would speak to pro-earth actually and ask Mel/Ross to help - they might make some up without the copper in perhaps if they think it is an issue, or you can start mixing your own ;)

Hi
thanks for all the comments

Faracat / Orange horse .. I am restricted to how often I can feed him over the day, which is why I went for a pellet in the end as the volume is not as great vs KG .. for the amount I need to feed him at the moment I would need to feed a large volume of oats (for example) and he would end up with far too much in each meal ... I would rather feed straights, as would also be cheaper , but currently is not possible sadly

good idea re contacting the Pro Earth guys , will go and do that - mixing my own would probably end up a disaster :-)

Equivita do similar supplements to Progressive Earth but will custom make them for you. Adding more of somethings and less or none of others as requested. They work out much cheaper for me, and the lady is lovely!
